A/N - Happy New Year! I hope you all had a great festive period and are looking forward to 2024 (how wild is that? I swear 2012 was only, like, yesterday). Hopefully this year I'll get back to posting a little more frequently and won't forget you guys so often!
This chapter was inspired by the song Learn To Fly by the Foo Fighters. I hope you all enjoy it.

The last place you had expected to be tonight was in the back of Billy's Camaro. Hell, two weeks ago the idea would've been laughable. Two weeks ago you were in, what you had thought to be, a committed relationship with a guy who definitely hadn't been Billy. But now, here you were, making out in the backseat of a car that you'd never even ridden in before today with a guy you'd never really given much attention to before. I mean, why would you have?

When Billy had come to Hawkins, you were already 8months into dating your (now ex-)boyfriend. And sure, the new kid at school was turning heads, but you hadn't really given him much thought. But now, that couldn't be further from the truth. Since finding out that your boyfriend had been cheating on you from day one, you had been paying a lot of attention to Billy. Hell, it was bordering on obsessive.

"Baby," Billy groaned, pulling back just enough to break from your kisses, his hand lifting to cup your jaw lightly. "Sweetheart, you need to slow down," he pressed on, as you attempted to ease forward, beyond his barricade and back to his lips. He chuckled when you succeeded, your tongue running over his bottom lip as it sought entry. "Baby," he snorted, finally managing to flip the two of you over so that he could sit up on his knees, putting some real distance between you.

"Billy," you whined, pouting up at him in a way that almost made him crack right there and then. Telling you no was quickly becoming something that he was struggling with, especially when you looked so pretty when you tried to persuade him to do whatever you wanted. "Please," you pressed on, letting your fingers bunch up in the collar of his shirt, trying your hardest to ease him back down to your level.

Billy practically groaned when you bit down on your bottom lip, waiting impatiently for him to return to you. "Baby," he started again. "I don't think we should go any further. Not yet," he confessed quietly, caressing your hip over your jeans. "Think we should take our time, alright?"

Your brow furrowed slightly. Of all of the things you had expected to come out of Billy Hargrove's mouth, that definitely didn't make the list. I mean, he was well known around school as a womaniser. He had slept with so many girls in your grade that you had expected him to be down for anything. But here he was telling you no.

"Oh," you uttered, shuffling backwards until you were sitting up, your back pressed to the car door. "Okay. Yeah," you murmured, trying your hardest to readjust your clothes to make yourself look presentable. "That's fine. I get it."

"Baby," Billy started again, reaching out for you, only to stop when you knocked his hand off course, slapping it aside. "It's not like I don't want to," he told you, still kneeling in front of you, frowning softly. "I really want to, Sweetheart, I just don't think you're ready for that right now."

"What?"

He let out a soft sigh. "You and Jake broke up less than two weeks ago," he reminded you, trying to keep his voice soft as if you were a baby deer and he was worried he would frighten you off if he spoke in his normal voice. "And I'm worried that if we start sleeping together then I'm just going to be the rebound," he pressed on. "I don't want to just be the rebound, Baby."

You bit down on the inside of your cheek, trying your hardest to make sense of what he was telling you. "I don't think I understand," you finally breathed out, looking up at him with the most adorable confused expression he had ever seen.

"Sweetheart. I know you're fresh out of something pretty serious, alright, so I don't expect you to be jumping into something else this quick, but I like you," he explained, reaching out for you again, a soft, relieved sigh slipping out of him when you let him touch your knee. "Like, I really like you. And I don't want you to start thinking I'm only here to hook up with you a couple of times whilst you're still getting over your shitty ex-boyfriend."

"Oh," you breathed again, reaching down to rest your hand over his, watching as a small smile pulled at his lips. "I wasn't just trying to use you as a rebound, you know that, right?"

He nodded slightly, a soft snort of laughter falling out of him. "I know, Baby."

"I do like you," you added. "We can take it slow if you want," you pressed on. "I'm sorry for rushing-"

"You don't have to apologise," he interrupted. "I'm not mad or upset. I just thought it would be better to be honest from the outset, right? Get all our ducks in a row before we jump right in."

You nodded slightly. "Right," you agreed softly. "Can we still kiss?"

A small smile pulled at your lips when he leaned forward to press a gentle kiss to your lips. "Now, why on Earth would I ever say no to that?" he hummed into the kiss, grinning when he pulled back to look at you. "You're so pretty, Baby."

A soft chuckle slipped out of you at the comment, your head shaking slightly. "Idiot-"

He leaned in again, cutting you off with another, deeper kiss.
