A/N - This chapter was inspired by the song Black Velvet by Alannah Myles. I hope you all enjoy it.
"Shhh," you hummed softly, bouncing the baby in your arms helplessly as she squalled up at you. She'd been restless all afternoon, jumping between fitful crying and hiccupped sobs since before Wayne had headed out for work. And now, a couple of hours later, you were practically on the verge of tears too. Your head was aching from the noise, your heart clenching at how sad she sounded. All you wanted was for her to go to sleep for a little while so that you could have a second of peace. "Daddy'll be home soon," you promised quietly, sniffling yourself as you continued to sway her in an attempt to soothe whatever had her so upset.
In all honesty, Eddie was supposed to be home an hour ago. He was supposed to come straight home after Hellfire. And God, if you weren't so pissed off that he wasn't home yet, you'd have been worried sick thinking about where he could've gotten to.
An hour more had passed before the baby had cried herself into a somewhat peaceful sleep, bundled up against your chest as you lay across the couch. You couldn't bring yourself to move her to her crib and risk waking her up, so you'd have to sit like this until you were both adequately rested.
At some point, you must've fallen asleep in the same position, startling awake when you felt a hand on your arm, your eyes shooting open to find Eddie looking down at you. There was no smile. No light in his eyes like you were used to seeing. Just pure sadness, beyond anything you had ever seen before. He hadn't even looked this broken up when your mom had kicked you out. Usually, he was better at hiding his emotions than this.
"Ed?" you breathed up, cradling the baby closer to you as you sat up slightly, brow furrowed in confusion.
"I'm sorry, Princess-" His words trailed off, his eyes falling to look at his daughter, sleeping peacefully, her lips slightly parted as she snoozed. God, she was the most precious thing he had ever seen, and he would never get tired of just looking at her. And that was exactly what made this so terrifying. "Something bad happened."
Your tongue darted out to wet your bottom lip as you tried to unravel what he was saying. "Ed-"
"It was just a normal deal," he uttered, taking your hand in his as he tried to calm himself down. "It was supposed to be a quick weed handover, you know? I don't know what happened."
You swallowed down the lump in your throat. "What happened?"
"Chrissy Cunningham is dead," he told you, watching as your expression shifted to pure shock, your mouth opening and closing as you searched for something to say. "I didn't hurt her," he reminded you. "I would never-"
"How?" you breathed out, your expression softening as you gave his hand a firm squeeze.
He shook his head. "It was so quick, Baby, and it sounds crazy." He paused, clearing his throat. "She lifted up into the sky like she was on strings or something, and then-" he hesitated, his eyes darting down to look at your daughter. "It was like I was hallucinating or something. It didn't seem possible."
"I-"
"I know it sounds crazy," he reminded you. "I know it does."
You nodded. "It does," you confirmed quietly. "But I believe you, alright?"
He took in a deep, shaking breath. "It was out by the benches. If they start asking around, everyone is going to point and blame me," he pressed on. "I don't know what to do."
"You were here all night. The baby was colicky and I needed you home with me, right?"
He hesitated for a moment. "But-"
"No buts. You were here with me all night. Got home right after Wayne headed out for work. You were trying to get her to stop crying whilst I sorted out dinner."
He nodded his understanding. "Okay."
"I trust you, Ed, and I believe you. But this is for the best, alright? We can't give them any reason to put you away and if you go in there and tell them she was floating, they'll think you're either lying or crazy."
Eddie hesitated before nodding again, releasing your hand to run his fingers over the baby's back. "What if they ask the neighbours? Won't it be suspicious that none of them heard her crying?"
"No one's going to question it. She cried for like 3 hours straight this evening."
"She did?" he uttered, his face shifting to pure concern as he turned his eyes to her peaceful face. "Oh Princess," he hummed out.
You let out a soft sigh. "You want to take over?"
"Gimme," he murmured, letting you sit up to transfer her to his arms, his entire expression softening when he felt her weight against him. "What had my little lady so upset, huh?" he hummed softly, tucking her gently against his chest as you stood to his height, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek.
"I think she just missed her daddy," you told him, running your hand over his shoulder. "She loves you so much," you pressed on, and when he glanced down at you, you were frowning softly. "I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have you," you added, swallowing down the lump forming in your throat.
"We don't need to think about it," he reminded you. "I'm right here. Not going anywhere anytime soon, remember?"
You nodded. "I know," you agreed quickly, forcing a small smile onto your lips. "I love you," you added softly, tucking yourself into his side as he wrapped his free arm around you, pulling you in until he could press a kiss to the top of your head.
"Have you eaten?" You shook your head slightly. "There's leftovers in the fridge, right? I've got her, go look after yourself," he uttered, reaching up to cup your face for a second. "I love you," he reminded you, pressing another quick kiss to your lips before nudging you towards the kitchen lightly.
