A/N - This chapter was inspired by the song We Close Our Eyes by Go West. This one is set a few years after Eddie and the Reader finished high school, so they're both in their mid-20s. I hope you all enjoy it.

You should've known that your date was too good to be true. Of course, he'd seemed nice enough when you first met him in a local bar on a girls' night out, but realistically, you should've known he wouldn't be showing up to meet you again.

You were almost certain that you looked totally pathetic too, sitting in the booth you'd specifically chosen when you'd walked in a couple of minutes early, a glass of wine half-finished on the table in front of you, and completely alone.

A soft sigh slipped out of you, your eyes falling closed as your head fell back against the padded back of your seat. When you'd been in high school, you had been certain that you would be married by now. You would have a home, an incredible job and a gorgeous husband and life would be perfect. Teenage-you would've thought now-you was a total failure.

"Well, hey there, Pretty Lady," a voice hummed, causing your eyes to shoot open, immediately sitting upright until you found Eddie smiling softly at you, standing at the end of the table. "This seat taken?" he pressed on, watching as you practically deflated at the question.

"Nope," you murmured, nodding for him to sit down across from you.

He stayed quiet as he shuffled into the booth, leaning his elbows on the tabletop, surveying you like you were the most interesting thing he'd ever seen. "You going to tell me why you're napping in the dark corner of some shitty bar?"

"I wasn't napping-"

"Y/N," he pressed on. "Come on," he added softly, head tipping to the side, concern clear on his features.

You released a hefty sigh. "I got stood up," you bit out. "The guy was supposed to be here like an hour ago and he never showed."

"Shit," he murmured. "Well, at least you know you're better off without him," he added, shrugging slightly.

"What?"

"I mean, come on, the guy's got to be a total idiot to just not show up when he's got you waiting for him, right? And we both know you don't need another idiot in your life."

Your lips tipped up slightly at the comment, a soft snort of laughter slipping out of you. "Yeah, I don't think I have room on the roster for another idiot when I've already got you in my life," you teased gently, watching his smile grow now that you didn't seem so upset.

"Yeah, I definitely fill up the idiot quota," he agreed softly, listening out for the soft chuckle that fell from you. "You deserve so much better than these guys that you let take you out, you know that?"

"You say that like I'm constantly going out with random guys-"

"That's not what I meant-"

"Ed, I'm not even half the catch you seem to think I am," you pressed on, shaking your head slightly. "I'm a control freak and I can be real mean; I'm borderline neurotic. I'm not an easy person to date."

There was a moment of silence before Eddie spoke again. "I don't think you're mean-" he murmured.

A sharp bark of laughter fell from your lips as you shook your head. "I love that that's the one you're going to disagree with."

"I think dating you would be easy," he pressed on, ignoring your interruption. "Sure, you get a little emotional sometimes, but so does everyone. That's totally normal." He paused for a moment. "In fact, if I had a girlfriend and she felt like she couldn't be emotional around me I would feel like a pretty crappy boyfriend."

"But you're special, Ed. Most guys don't think like you do. They don't care about stuff like that-"

"Let's stop talking about other guys for a second then, alright?" he hummed, taking a deep breath to gather his courage. "If you were my girlfriend, I think it would be pretty sweet. I mean, we get on great. We have fun when we hang out. I feel like I can say anything without you judging me-"

"Eddie-"

"And I think you're the prettiest damn thing I've ever seen," he persisted. "I've had an almighty crush on you since we were like 15."

You seemed to double-take at the comment, brow furrowing. "When we were 15 I had cystic acne and braces."

"Yeah," he agreed softly. "And I still thought you were cute as all hell." He hesitated for a moment, his tongue dipping out to wet his bottom lip. "Let me take you out one time; if you aren't madly in love with me by the end of the night, we can pretend it never happened, alright?"

You paused, considering the offer for just a moment before nodding. "Okay; deal."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah," you confirmed. "What's the worst that could happen?"

He nodded, biting back his smile. "Alright then, Pretty Girl," he started again. "You won't regret it."
