"Y/n... about that day,"
You tensed up at Diluc's words, not liking where this could possibly go. "I want us to push those moments past us." He says. "Please, don't blame yourself and feel horrible for what happened." He pauses, carefully picking out his next words. "I would like for us to be on good terms. And I hope I'm not asking for too much, but I want things to be how they used to — I want us to be friends."
The word left a distasteful sensation on his tongue once it left his mouth. But he couldn't bare to see the way he makes you feel.
Diluc's eyes bored into you, anticipating for you to say something. Anything. Your eyes move in conflict with your emotions, fidgeting with the bandage wrapped around your palm before you finally respond.
"It's what we were and always will be, correct?"
Your eyes finally meet his for the first time since seeing him. Diluc mentally grimaces at your response; an unrecognizable feeling made his stomach coil. He thought he was prepared for anything that was about to leave your lips, until you said that. Hearing those words come from you was like someone impaled him straight through the heart.
You swear you could see the subtle shift of his composure through his face, but the talent this man holds to quickly recover his poise in just a split of a second was impressive — too impressive that it made you have second thoughts about it just being a mere part of your imagination. That maybe it was just the feelings of hope, the hope in your heart trying to influence your mind; the hope of there being a chance that you saying those words hurt him as much as it hurt you; the hope of him realizing that he didn't really mean what he said that night, and that his words were a mistake; the hope of him of just coming to his senses and admitting that he lied, and that he actually wants to be with you.
Diluc's lips tightened after what seemed to be forever."Glad you understood." He says with the change of his tone sounding more formal, equally returning to your response with his famous stoic expression. You flinch at the way he replied to you, he was only adding more salt into the wound. But, you did it first.
The atmosphere was so heavy. Anybody witnessing what was happening could immediately tell that you and Diluc were obviously lying.
As much as you hated it, you kept the steady gaze, and as did he. You didn't want take your usual cowards way out, and wanted him to qknow that you weren't always one to back away.
You don't know why, but people always seem to think that just because you're quiet it means that you're going to let them walk all over you and not say anything about it. Part of this reasoning made you not want look away from his stare, which was really intimidating the heck out of you. Diluc takes a step closer and crosses his arms. His piercing eyes looked right through yours as you obviously struggled with wanting to look away.
And of course, you broke first.
"I-I should get going, Jean will probably get mad if I don't finish up." You said, standing up and already making your way to the door.
"Y/n, wait."
As much as you really wanted to leave, his voice alone made you stop. You were curious at what else he had to say. He gives a good glance at your hand before looking back up at you.
-
The next thing you know, Diluc was already carefully inspecting your wound on your palm as you both sat down on one of the tables.
