This just couldn't be real, couldn't be true. He couldn't be gone, he just wouldn't believe it. Though all the signs of this happening were there, all the signs that his depression was getting bad again were there. But was he just too busy to see it? Were all of them too busy to notice?

Grillby crumbled to the ground when the Alphys told them the news, that there was nothing she could have done, he was simply one minute too late...

As the tears poured out of his eyes, he gazed at everyone else. Undyne had a hand over her mouth to stop the sobs, she couldn't let Papyrus see her break down, though it didn't take long for the skeleton in question to throw himself into Mettaton's arms in seek of some form of comfort, and the robot was clearly crying too. Toriel buried her face into Asgore's chest as the two of them cried, the situation was hard on them all.

Could Grillby truly feel like his work was crashing down around him at this point? They lost a dear friend, Papyrus lost his brother, and Grillby lost his boyfriend. But he couldn't help but feel responsible. What if he payed more attention to Sans' mood that week? What if he burst through that bathroom door just one minute earlier?

The ride home wasn't any easier on any of them, the car was silent aside from Papyrus' sniffles in an attempt to not cry again.

It was a scary time for them all. Nobody had ever seen Papyrus cry before, much less cry like the way he did. Though that's just what grief does, the sudden knowledge that you're going home without your brother. Despite all the annoying puns and the inability to keep his room clean, the thought of never hearing another laugh, seeing another smile, receiving another hug, it was crushing his soul. Not just Papyrus, but Grillby as well. The two of them shared so many memories. Their first kiss, their first date, the many sleepovers with cuddles to comfort Sans when he had a nightmare, leaving the underground together, moving in with Papyrus and Sans, the realization that he could never do any of that anymore was too painful.

Once they all made it back to Papyrus' house, Undyne placed a hand on the skeletons shoulder, "Hey Pap, let's go get ice cream, yeah? It might help," She said in an attempt to console him. Though he quickly pushed her hand off him.

"Help what, Undyne?! My brother is gone and it's al my fault!" Papyrus yelled, tears streaming down his face.

"Oh, Papy no, it's not your fault-" Mettaton started, though Papyrus just shoved him away as well and ran up the stairs to his room, slamming the door behind him.

The house was quiet once again, at least until Toriel placed a hand on Grillby's shoulder, "Grillby, would you like us to give you and Papyrus some space?"

Grillby just nodded, and everyone left shortly after, leaving him alone in a quiet house. He sighed and felt the tears spring to life once more. Sans would always be sitting on the couch when he would come home from work and run over to give him a hug when he heard him. Grillby could still hear his voice, seeing almost an illusion of those days.

"Sans! I'm home!" Grillby would call out every day when he walked through the door. He would smile when he would see Sans skull peaking up from behind the arm of the couch.

"Welcome home, Grillbz," Sans would say, getting up off of the couch to rush over and engulf him in a tight hug.

Grillby would kiss his head and allow Sans to cuddle up to him on the couch, so entranced by every word that Grillby would say about his day.

But now that's gone, and the living room is bare. No hug, no kiss, no cuddles...no Sans.

He sighed and decided to make his way upstairs, right now Papyrus needed him, or at he very last someone to check on him. He knocked on the skeletons bedroom door, hearing a quiet voice granting him entrance.

Upon entering the room, he saw Papyrus sitting against the wall with his head in his arms, clearly distraught and upset, but who wouldn't be in this type of scenario.

Grillby shut the door behind him and sat next to the skeleton, wrapping his arms around his legs. "Papyrus..." he started, though he wasn't sure exactly on what he wanted to say. Luckily Papyrus spoke instead.

"Is he really gone? This isn't some type of new joke Sans is pulling? This is real?" Papyrus asked, lifting his head up slightly.

"I...I'm so sorry Papyrus, but this is real," Grillby said, allowing Papyrus to cry into his shoulder. That's when he noticed an all too familiar blue jacket resting on Papyrus' lap. This is going to be too difficult for him to bear.

"Its all my fault! I should have said something! I should have been there for him more!" Papyrus cried, his breathing shakey.

Grillby rubbed the skeletons back, "No Papyrus, this isn't your fault, none of us knew he would do this."

"No! I should have told you or Undyne or Mettaton or someone that Sans was cutting himself again! I just didn't want to lose his trust, and now I've lost him!"

Grillby felt his heart shatter into a million pieces. Sans was hurting himself again? Papyrus just wanted to help him...but why wouldn't Sans at least tell his own boyfriend? Why would he even start again when he was doing so well? He was clean for so long.

Grillby hugged Papyrus tightly, "Listen Papyrus, I promise this is not your fault. You were just trying to do what Sans thought was best. Don't blame yourself, he wouldn't want that." He didn't want to go into the rant of how badly he thought this was his own fault, how he didn't even notice the sign, how he wasn't quick enough to reach him and get him help. Though he should listen to his own words, Sans wouldn't want them to blame themselves. It wasn't right.

They stayed like that for a little while, Grillby allowing Papyrus to pull away when he was ready. Eventually Papyrus did let go, and he hugged the blue jacket close to his chest. Thy both knew that everything that happened after this would be hard, things would never be the same.

Eventually, Grillby left Papyrus alone, for the skeleton wished to call his own boyfriend and his best friend to apologize for his actions. Grillby on the other hand made his way into his and Sans' room, though he supposed it was just his room now.

He chuckled a bit at the memory of Sans trying so hard to keep this room clean for my sake, yet there was always that one sock left in the corner. But now it's gone now, no sock in sight. In fact, the room does look oddly cleaner that it has ever been. Did he clean up for him?

Grillby sighed and layed down on the bed, noticing a note left on Sans' side. He picked it up, but didn't read it. Was he ready to? Yes, he needed this closure, to finally be ready to accept that Sans is gone, that the love of his life, is gone.

Dear Grillby,

I'm so sorry that things had to go this way, I never did truly want to leave you or Pap, or anyone for that matter, but I just can't live in fear anymore. The resets, the timelines, the amount of times I have witnessed all of you die over and over again, and the countless times that I have failed to avenge you.

I know none of this makes any sense to you, but I promise you that if I could have done something differently, I would, but I just couldn't come up with an answer this time. Though I trust that things will be better in time. I want you to move on, find someone better than me that will make you happy. Don't blame yourself, this was my choice. All I ask of you is to do one last favor for me. Take care of Papyrus, make sure that, even without me, he has the best life he possibly can. Stand in my place as his best man at his wedding, spoil him on his birthday, and until either he or you moves out, read him his bedtime story for me.

I love you Grillby, I love you Pap, I truly love all of you.

Goodbye,
Sans

"I love you too, Sans..." Grillby whispered, setting the note to the side before laying his head on the pillow and attempting to sob the rest of his pain away.
