The sound of voices down the steps awoke Papyrus from his slumber. It's not unusual that Gaster is up early, but it began to get strange when Papyrus heard the sound of his older brothers voice. Why was Sans up so early? He's never up before Papyrus.
With a groan and shaky arms, Papyrus pushed himself up out of bed, catching himself before he fell over. The room had a slight sway to it and his bones ached. He didn't feel good at all.
Gripping the sides of the stairs, Papyrus made his way down the stairs, seeing his father standing near the open front door.
"Have fun at Grillby's, Sans. Call me if you need anything," Gaster said to who Papyrus assumed was Sans.
"I will, Dad. Tell Pap I love him when he wakes up," Sans replied, rushing out the door and towards his friends house.
Their voices pounded against Papyrus' skull, the volume was agonizing. Papyrus was scared, he didn't know what was going on, all he knew what that he wanted his father to fix it.
Gaster sighed when he shut the front door. He was worried. Papyrus never sleeps in this late, perhaps he needed to check on him. He turned around in preparation to head upstairs, but he jumped a bit when he saw his son slowly coming down the stairs with tears falling down his cheekbones.
Gaster rushed over, crouching down in fron of his son. "Oh my, Papyrus whats the matter? Are you hurt?"
Papyrus slowly shook his head, just throwing himself into Gasters arms. That was when Gaster noticed the abnormally worm temperature of Papyrus' head along with the slight shaking of his bones with every move he made.
"I don't feel good, Dad," Papyrus said with a weak and raspy voice.
Gaster felt his heart break at the desperation in his sons voice. He held Papyrus gently in his arms and slowly rubbed circles on his back.
"I believe you're sick." Papyrus whined at the mention of being sick, hating the idea of feeling bad for a whole day or two. Gaster did his best to reassure his son, plastering a small and sympathetic smile on his face. "It'll be okay, Pap, I promise. And I'll be here to take care of you."Papyrus didn't respond, instead clinging onto Gaster with small, quivering hands and allowing himself of cry.
Gaster hated seeing Papyrus in this state. His usual happy and bubbly nature was replaced by a scared and sad on. He just wished there was some way to fix it. And that's when an idea donned on him.
With slow movements so as not to disturb Papyrus' head further, he gently pried Papyrus off of him and Placed him on the couch. "Stay here, Pap, I'll be back in just a moment." He walked upstairs and grabbed the pillow and blanket from Papyrus' bed as well as his favorite stuffed bear. With his magic, he grabbed his and Sans' pillows and blankets as well, bringing them downstairs to his son.
He gave Papyrus his teddy bear and placed his pillow down, allowing his son to get comfortable before covering him up with his blanket.
"Dad, what are you doing?" Papyrus asked, his tears drying up a bit as he sniffles.
"You'll see," Gaster responded, using his magic to maneuver blankets and pillows all around the couch. He smiled as he saw Papyrus' eyes light up at the sight of his creation: a blanket fort.
Despite his sickened state, Papyrus was excited. It had been so long since they made a blanket fort, and now here he was, sitting inside one with his father next to him. Perhaps being sick wouldn't be so bad after all.
The sight before him was a relief to Gaster, the pure joy on Papyrus' face was perfect compared to the sadness he had before.
He placed his hand on Papyrus' back, rubbing soothing circles to further comfort the boy. "Feeling a little better, Pap?"
"Mhm, still don't feel too good though," Papyrus responded, holding his teddy bear close.
Gaster sighed, "that's to be expected. I'll go grab some things, but in the meantime how about you select a movie for us to watch?"
Papyrus smiled and sat up a bit, taking the remote from Gaster and scrolling through the movies that he was able to watch. It didn't take long for Gaster to return with some cold medicine, a cool rag for Papyrus' head, something light for the boy to eat since he didn't have breakfast, as well as some water for him to sip on throughout the day.
Papyrus was never a difficult one when it came to taking his medicine, Sans was usually the one to put up the most fight. And despite the bad taste, Papyrus took it willingly before asking his father if his movie selection was alright. Gaster reassured the boy that anything he picked was alright as he got comfortable on the couch. Papyrus decided to switch up his positioning, leaning his pillow against Gasters leg before laying back down. Gaster pulled the blanket up Papyrus' torso and gently rubbed the top of Papyrus skull to soothe him.
The two of them stared intently at the screen, with Papyrus occasionally attempting to sing along to some of the songs, but Gaster had to unfortunately stop him due to how hoarse his voice was. He knew Papyrus would be more upset later on if he couldn't speak more than if he couldn't sing right now.
And that's what the day was like for them,Gaster cuddling and comforting his son while he recovered. Just them and their blanket fort, at least until Sans came home the next day and joined them.
