Gaster sat as his work bench, his head in his hands. There was so much work that needed to get done, and not enough time to do it. It's been days since he left the lab. River and the boys must be so worried about him, he's been watching them this whole time.
Yet whenever he tried to tell himself to take a break, something in him kept saying that there was no time for that. Still, the more he moved his pencil, the more the pounding in his skull worsened. Was he sick? Probably, but there was no time to focus on such trivial matters. More experiments and trial runs needed to be done on the souls.
Just as he stood up to work on his new theory, a knock on the door was heard before it opened, revealing q concerned looking Asgore.
"Ah, there you are, Gaster. I haven't seen you in about three days and I was getting worried," He said, stepping inside the lab.
"Hello, your majesty," Gaster said, pushing his glasses up to rub his eyes a bit, "what can I do for you?"
"C'mon Gaster, no need for such formalities. I was just coming to check up on you," Asgore said, finally noticed how off Gaster looked and acted, "are you alright?"
Gaster sighed and crossed his arms, "of course, I'm just a little frustrated that's all."
Asgore looked at him sympathetically as he walked over, placing a hand on Gaster's shoulder. "I can tell that something else is troubling you, my dear. Please, do not hide things from me, you promised."
Gaster looked down a bit, a little ashamed about making Asgore worry about him. Yet Asgore lifted his head a bit and smiled at him for reassurance.
"I'm just tired, and perhaps a little sick from working so hard. It's nothing to be concerned about," Gaster said, taking Asgores hand away from his face.
"If you're sick then you shouldn't be working. Come on, let's get you out of here," Asgore said, gently taking Gasters hand and dragging him out of the lab.
"But I still have a lot to get done, I can't stop now," Gaster tried pulling away from Asgore, but to no avail.
"I didn't ask if you wanted to. Besides, I'm sure your boys are worried about you. I think you can stay here for a little while to get in a better condition before going home," he took Gaster to the living room, setting the skeleton up on the couch before walking into the kitchen. "What kind of tea do you like?"
"Whatever tea you usually make," Gaster took his glasses off and set them to the side. He's never admit it, but lying on the couch and relaxing was very nice.
It wasn't long before Asgore came back with a small tray that had a bowl of soup and a cup of tea sitting on it. He was certain that Gaster hadn't eaten anything either.
They sat in silence for a moment, allowing Gaster to eat a little bit before sparking another conversation.
"Why do you do this to yourself, Gaster?" Asgore asked.
"I'm not sure I know what you're referring to," Gaster said, taking a sip of his tea.
"I know you do," Asgore said, not in the mood for Gaster to play dumb when he knows he's not.
Gaster sighed and put the cup down, "I'm determined to break the barrier. Recently, Sans had broken his ulna and it sparked a conversation. Long story short, I want to get monsters out of the underground, but I mostly want my sons to see the surface."
Asgore admired Gasters determination for his sons, it's something he remembered feeling towards his own children at one point. And yet, seeing Gaster look ashamed with his actions broke the kings heart. Now Asgore felt bad for almost snapping at Gaster for doing something that he felt was right. Still, he needed to learn that he'll never achieve his goal at this rate.
Asgore got up from his chair and sat on the couch next to Gaster, pulling the skeleton into a hug. "I know that this is something that you strive to achieve, but at the rate you're going your goal will never be a reality. You need some time to take care of yourself and be there for you children. You can work hard during your designated work hours."
Gaster was taken aback, but he slowly wrapped his arms around Asgore, burying his head into his shoulder. Asgore was right, the experiments could wait. He couldn't imagine how worried his sons must be right now.
Once they pulled out of the hug, Asgore gently rubbed Gasters cheek, "now, let's focus on getting you well enough to go home. I'm giving you three days off to make up for the time that you were here."
Gaster opened his mouth to protest, but was stopped by Asgore once he got up to get a cool rag and some medicine for Gaster.
The skeleton stayed seated on the couch and smiled a bit, a small blush creeping its way onto his cheekbones. It was nice to feel cared for and loved like this, though it could just be the fever talking. Still, Gaster would enjoy his time here now, whatever was going on in the lab could wait for a few days.
