Gaster leaned against the trunk of the tree, taking another puff of his cigarette. He had finally managed to get Sans to talk about his troubles, but he didn't expect what he had heard. Sans didn't feel as though he was ready to take his place? That he wasn't worthy of the responsibility? Of course he always had his suspicions that Sans was depressed, and his outburst only confirmed it for him. Sans was always one to self- deprecate, though now he finally understood more about why.
The older skeleton put out his cigarette when he was done, finally deciding to end the silence between them when he realized that Sans wasn't going to continue.
"I'm not going to just drop dead when I retire, Sans, I'm honestly surprised you would think like that. However, I do understand that this job is a lot and it can be difficult to handle, and you may feel as though you're not ready for it, but out of every scientist at the lab I feel as though you are the most capable of filling my role. You are a extraordinary scientist, Sans, and the underground would be lucky to have you in charge," Gaster said, looking up to the treehouse where his sulking son sat.
Sans put out his own cigarette, feeling more tears streaming down his face. "Dad...I'm not as capable as you, I never have been and I never will be. I don't matter as much as you do, and I dont think I could handle the stress. Hell, just look how well I can handle myself." Sans wiped his now drying tears, leaning his skull against the wall. "I'm sorry..."
Gaster sighed, "I told you that you have nothing to be sorry for. I understand if you do not wish to take my place, but I do want you to consider it." Gaster lt he silence continue for a moment before changing the conversation back to the other topic before this whole "not taking over the lab" conversation. "Now, onto other matters, why don't we discuss this feeling of yours that you don't matter?"
Sans groaned, "do we have to? I told ya that I don't even know why I said it."
"And I told you that it was because you meant it. I know you wouldn't say something so passionately if you didn't mean it. And I simply just wish to know why you think that of yourself."
The younger skeleton kept quiet, not really knowing how to respond. What was he supposed to say? Couldn't he already tell that getting everyone out of the underground was more important than him and his stupid feelings? Sure Gaster was his dad, but he was still the royal scientist, and that mant that he had royal duties. His time couldn't be wasted on someone like Sans, even though deep in his subconscious he wished that Gaster would just hold him and comfort him like he used to. But he had to stay strong, he couldn't let Gaster com up here and waste more of his time.
"I just..." he sighed, "I don't want to talk about it."
"Yes you do," Gaster persisted, "I can hear it in your voice, you don't really want me to leave do you?"
Sans groaned and put his head in his arms, "I've been tellin' ya to leave since ya got here."
"Yet I'm still here. And that's something that you need to understand, I'm never leaving Sans, because you are my son. You and your brother mean more to me than my job, than anyone else in the I underground. I didn't leave because I care about you, Sans, because you do matter. You matter to me, to Papyrus, to Grillby, to a lot of people. Your work has given hope to so many people, and your simple existence has given hope to me."
Sans was stunned at his father's words, feeling the tears forming all over again. Did Gaster truly mean that? Of course he does, he used his serious voice. He wouldn't have said it if he didn't mean it. And he felt as though he couldn't suppress the small sob that escaped his throat, which alerted Gaster on the ground below.
"Sans, did I say something wrong?"
San chuckled a bit as he continued to cry, "No, you said everything right, like always." There was silence between them again, but not as long this time, "Alright old man, move away from the tree for a second."
Gaster was confused but moved anyway, smiling and sighing with relief when he saw the ladder leading up to the treehouse slowly moving downwards. Once it touched the ground, Gaster carefully climbed up, only to frown slightly when he saw the state Sans was in.
A few stray tears still fell down the skeletons cheekbones while his head rested on his arms. Gaster could tell that he forced a smile when he saw him, causing Gaster to instinctually move to his sons side.
"I wish you would talk to me more instead of pushing me away," Gaster said, breaking the silence between them.
"I know," Sans sighed, "I'm sorry..." His apology was quiet, almost mumbled as he fully submerged his head in his arms.
Gaster sighed and decided to place a hand on Sans' back, rubbing soothing circles to comfort his son. It was working, and soon Sans sat up and moved closer to his father, leaning his head against his shoulder.
Gaster kept an arm around Sans, "no need to be sorry," he said, using his free hand to wipe the tears that were flowing from Sans' eye sockets. They sat there for a moment, Sans just enjoying the comfort of his father's embrace as he calmed down and collected himself, eventually deciding to get up. Gaster shortly followed, "ready to go?"
"Yeah."
The two of them climbed down, Gaster after Sans. A soft crunch was heard when their feet hit the ground, and Sans let out a sigh as they began their walk home.
Gaster wrapped an arm around Sans, pulling him into a side hug as they walked. Sans chuckled and placed an arm around Gaster as well.
"I love you, son," Gaster said.
Sans smiled, a genuine one this time, "I love you too, Dad."
