Aiden

I began to laugh out loud, phone pressed up against my ear as I heard an unamused snort come from the other end.

It had been months since I had been asked to do anything like this, and I actually wanted to leave that entire life behind.

Marco was making it very difficult.

"You're joking right?" I asked into the phone, running a hand through my twists as I readjusted on my couch. "You can't possibly be serious."

"I am." Marco said, his voice dead serious as it came from the other end of the phone. "She's 16 Aiden, 17 soon. People from my work have started to learn about us, word is getting around and I can't be there."

"You know I don't do this anymore. I've left that life behind Marco, I have an actual job now. I can't just-"

"I wouldn't ask if it wasn't necessary. The boys at that highschool are..." Marcos voice became quiet, and I already knew how that sentence would end.

"Pretty girl, single, big school, I get the picture." I muttered, knowing I was giving in. I couldn't continue on with my current life knowing Marco needed me. Knowing my best friend's younger sister was in danger. "How much are you paying?"

"As much as you need."

I hummed i'm satisfaction at his answer, tilting my head back and looking at the ceiling while I thought about some other questions I should ask. "What all do I have to do?"

"I need you to go to school with her, keep an eye on her. If I work late at the office I need you to just lurk around the house for a while. But one of us needs to be around at all times, no matter what. We lose my sister, we lose millions." Marco said, although I knew he loved his sister for much more than her financial worth.

"Explain to me again why she can't collect her portion of the money now?" I asked, still confused why Maria had to wait till 18 to collect the money her parents left her in the will.

"That's just how it's written, she has no need for it now. She would probably spend it getting her nails done and buying a new closet. At 18 she can go to college, get a house, and make a name for herself at the company. The money would go to waste right now."

"Makes sense." I was still looking at the ceiling, half thinking about how I was gonna quit my job and half thinking about college.

I never had the opportunity to go when I graduated, meaning I would never make as much as Marco and Maria have had handed to them. I wasn't scared to admit to being jealous of their rich lifestyle, which was part of the reason I was going to take this job. I wanted in.

"I'll do it Marco. If I die, turn me into a cactus."

I could hear Marco's faint laugh, and the smile on his mouth when he said "Thank you mi hermano."

It was something he had been calling me for years, 'my brother' in spanish.

"No problem."
