I looked up, searching for the winged creature. When my eyes made contact with it, I saw Neteyam by its side, offering it some fruit or something similar to feed it. I couldn't see clearly from the height. They were high up on a giant branch. After a few minutes, I saw Neteyam climb onto his ikran and watched as it spread its wings and took flight. I saw the ikran's enormous wings move away slightly before landing on the ground, flapping its wings widely and creating a strong gust of wind that tousled my hair, before settling on the ground just a few meters away from me.
Neteyam slid down from the enormous animal, "Easy, Taw, she's a friend," he told it before caressing its head.
"Don't look into its eyes," Neteyam warned me, giving me a mischievous smile. Immediately, I averted my gaze from the animal at his comment.
"So, Taw?" I asked, still looking at the ground.
"Taw" is the word the Na'vi use to refer to the sky.
I heard him laugh, still a few steps away from me with his ikran. "Yes," he simply said.
"I like it, I think it's perfect," I let out a timid and soft laugh. I did my best not to lift my gaze from my feet. The ikran truly intimidated me. The mere presence of the beautiful creature near me terrified me. Yet, I was surprised that I hadn't run away the instant he landed in front of me.
Suddenly, Neteyam burst into laughter, causing me to raise my gaze in his direction, completely intrigued. "He won't harm you," he reassured me calmly. "I said not to look into his eyes, but you can still look at me," he grinned mischievously, and once again, he couldn't help but laugh at the situation. And I couldn't help but blush.
Neteyam extended his hand to me. "Come."
I couldn't resist that smile. In fact, I was certain that some kind of enchantment kept me even now so close to this imposing creature. That same enchantment was what made me take Neteyam's hand.
He never looked so carefree, so joyful. I had seen him smile today more than any other day. It was simply impossible for me to say no to joining him on his ikran.
I wasn't even sure if the air mask I was wearing could provide me with enough oxygen for much longer.
With an uneasy and erratic breath, I grabbed the harness that rested around Taw's torso. I was preparing to jump when large hands found their way to my waist.
My breath was too pronounced to go unnoticed. I was grateful that he was behind me at that moment and couldn't notice it.
Gently, his hands took hold of my waist, lifting me into the air and helping me onto the creature.
I quickly slid my leg over the saddle.
He mounted behind me, positioning himself quite close as he took hold of the reins in front of me.
"Ready?" he asked, the excitement in his voice palpable, and that was enough to make me say, "yes."
As Taw opened its enormous wings and soared into the air, I felt the wind rushing against our bodies. I glanced down for a few seconds as we moved away from the ground, rising higher and higher. Then, I squeezed my eyes shut, feeling the powerful flapping of Taw's wings, its breath, and the wind on my face.
A scream of terror escaped me when suddenly we made a sharp and abrupt turn. "Open your eyes, scaredy-cat," Neteyam said between laughs.
It took me a few seconds, but taking a deep breath, I obeyed.
The first thing I saw were his huge, shining eyes gazing at me. Once again, I felt my blood rushing to my cheeks. I was embarrassed that he had noticed my panic.
