A few days had passed since Neteyam had taken me flying with him, through Pandora with his ikran. He and I hadn't seen each other, since then.I had spent most of my time with Norm and Harper, primarily assisting them in gathering and organizing the remaining military information since the RDA was expelled from the planet.
I would have preferred to be part of the human-Navi relations team, dedicated to cultural exchange, or the exploration team, focused on sample collection and studying the flora and fauna, or even the construction team, involved in dismantling bases and field structures, rather than being part of the reconnaissance team.
But all those teams explore the remote and hostile environment of Pandora, so it's only possible to participate if you have an Avatar that allows you to fulfill the missions without putting your human life in danger, leaving me without the possibility of being part of them. And only being able to participate in reconnaissance.
Thanks to my unwavering passion for studying and learning, it had been about a year or two since Harper had secured me a place in the reconnaissance team, assisting the scientists, now and then, from the safety of the laboratory.
But these last few days, Harper had been relying on my assistance more than usual. Although it struck me as peculiar, I didn't dwell on it and readily offered my help without hesitation.
Furthermore, Neteyam hadn't left my mind since we saw each other that night. Immersing myself in work and study helped keep my mind distracted from that warm and sweet kiss, which had me restless.
This morning, like any other morning, I woke up to the gentle rays of sunlight filtering through my blinds. I brushed my teeth, dressed in a simple loose white t-shirt and military green cargo pants, and headed out to have breakfast at the small table where Spider and I always ate together.
When I arrived, Spider was already there, eating—or rather, devouring his breakfast ferociously. Still chewing his food, he asked, "Finally awake, huh? Did you do anything last night?"
"First, that's rude," I replied with a mischievous giggle, pointing at his open mouth full of food. "And second, yes, I stayed up reading a new human novel that Harper recommended to me," I smiled, still feeling a bit sleepy.
I didn't want to tell him the truth. I didn't want to admit that I had trouble sleeping ever since the day I flew with Neteyam. That I couldn't stop thinking about the feeling of his arms around me, his breath on the back of my neck, but above all, those mesmerizing eyes locked with mine.
"Since Neteyam took you flying with him, you've been even more absorbed in your human stuff," Spider said, his voice tinged with a hint of resentment. "Who understands you?" he added.
"Well," I smiled shyly, "actually, I've wanted to go out with you guys, join you in exploring the forest, and all those things you do with Kiri and Lo'ak," I finished and served myself breakfast before joining Spider at the table.
"Ohh, why didn't you mention it?" he laughed playfully. "We've gone out at least three times this week with Lo'ak."
"I don't know," I lied. It was true that I wanted to go out with them, as I had mentioned to Kiri at the party. But I was afraid of running into Neteyam. For some reason, the idea of seeing him made me tremble.
"Anyway, you can come now. We'll meet Kiri at the riverbank in 30 minutes," Spider said, glancing at a wall clock a few meters away from us.
"Sure!" I exclaimed. "What are you guys planning to do?" I asked as I started eating my meal.
"I was mainly going to accompany Kiri. Mo'at needs some herbs and other things to make ointments, and she asked Kiri to get them," Spider said, a bit confused, trying to recall exactly what Kiri needed. "Lo'ak will join us a bit later," he added, "but he's only coming because he's bored," he scoffed.
