Brief explanation of book:
This story is about a normal girl suddenly tossed into the world of the paranormal as she tries to survive the dangers and perils of the her new high school - Mystic High. There, she learns magicks, meets strange friends, and uncovers a stormy mystery beneath the cool facade of the school for immortals. Oh! It also features the process of growing-up and self-discovery for our protagonist.
Target audience:
Teens and Young Adult (13-20)
The 'paranormal' at Mystic High:
There are elementals (advanced witches with an affinity to the elements fire, water, air, clay, and energy), weres (shape-shifters), vampires, and fairies - even spirits and gods. Other genres: Mystery (assuredly) and Romance
My writing process:
I write a terribly lengthy story plan which includes plot points, summaries, character notes, drawings, chapter plans, etc. etc.. Then I start churning out my ideas, chapter by chapter - albeit slowly.
Challenges:
I'm always a tad befuddled on starting and ending a chapter for some reason. I overcome it by reviewing my plot point plans from my story plan and try really hard to figure it out.
What 'writing well' means to me:
It depends on the genre. For example: prose-heavy stories on, like Suskind's 'Perfume', require over-imaginative descriptions of the setting, context, and characters; but dialogue-heavy stories, like Ahern's 'Rosie Dunne', requires clear uncomplicated emotive language. But in the case of Mystic High, I've been doing my best to balance dialogue and prose. Hopefully, I've been successful?
