Interview:
1. What's the story behind your Wattpad Username, if any?
It's taken from a poetry collection written by my dad, an author and journalist in his youth. Nyhterides means 'bats' in Greek. One of his poetry collections was called Bats in the Light. It's a tribute to him.
2. Do you like to write in the same genres you read? What are your favorite genres?
I write dark fiction and adore reading it. However, I'll read almost anything that catches my attention.
3. What does your writing environment look like?
We have a corner couch. I sit in the corner and write (usually at night when everyone is asleep). I have my headphones on and listen to music that inspires the type of story and scene I'm writing—anything from Chopin to Nightwish.
4. Where do you tend to find the inspiration to write?
I have a lil' Muse inside my brain who constantly whispers stories to me. I love quotes, but inspiration is everywhere. It's a spark waiting to become an inferno.
5. Tell us 5 things you like:
Writing, dark romance, spending time with people I love, things with wings, and reading.
6. What part of the writing process do you find to be the most challenging?
Deadlines!
7. Do you experience writer's block? If yes, how do you beat it?
If I have writer's block and no deadline, I take a break (my longest break was over 2 years). If I have a deadline, I stress!!! I'll talk with friends, get some encouragement (a much-needed push sometimes), and continue.
8. Do you have any favorites or least favorite tropes? Please tell us why you like or dislike them =)
I think any trope can be good if you write it well. My favourite is Forbidden Romance because it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Now, if it's a dark, forbidden romance, I'm hooked! My story, Rosalind, is about a forbidden romance (and a love triangle, which is another favourite of mine).
9. Are you a native English speaker? If not, what language obstacles have you faced when writing in English?
I'm a native English speaker but bilingual (I'm fluent in Greek too).
10. If you had an extra hour each day, how would you spend it?
Write! I have a toddler and am busy during the day, so an extra hour would be stellar.
11. Can you share some of your greatest writing achievements or highlights with us?
Honestly, just being able to write, create, and share my work is a gift. I hid my writing for decades. Only a handful of people knew. One day, I shared the fact that I write with an acquaintance. He told me it's no good keeping stories hidden. So, I took his advice. Within a year, I got my first publishing deal (a book of poetry with a small house in Greece). I never expected it. I'm happy and surprised whenever I publish something and consider it an achievement.
12. If you could experience something for the first time again, what would it be?
I love every single story I write. I'd love to create them again and experience bringing my characters and their worlds to life!
13. What's the best advice you ever received?
There are two: first, listen to advice and feedback from people more experienced than you, and second, never do anything you'll regret.
14. If you could meet any character from a story, who would you meet and why?
Rosalind is from the story of the same name. She keeps balancing between good and evil. She was brought up to be a lady, but meeting cruel Lord Caspian brought out her darker side. She is strong, confused, sometimes insane, honourable, and fiercely protective of those she loves. I'd love to talk with her and understand things better from her point of view rather than my own.
15. Have you ever pulled from your own experiences to write a scene?
"I will share a line from a movie I adore, Velvet Goldmine, "A real artist creates beautiful things and puts nothing of his own life into them." Many artists will tell you we put nothing but fiction in our work. Nothing but what we create in our imagination. But can we escape what we see, feel and live? What do you think, my friend? "
16. Do you find that listening to music or making graphics helps the creative process?
Absolutely!
17. Planner or Pantser?
I'm such a pantster. I used to pants everything up until a few years ago. Now, I pants about halfway and then make notes (by notes, I mean a few sentences per chapter).
18. Do you have a special message or shoutout for anyone you want to share?
You are all beautiful people, and I am honoured to be a better person and writer because I know you. So many of you have been there for me and my work. You have no idea what that means. I have so much love for you all!
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
I'm a Gen X baby and love reading and writing stories that take place in the 80s.
