Sitting down at the table with papers sprawled out everywhere we began to get to work on finding out more about the new missing girl while Dean was off talking to the police trying to see if he could get anymore information on what happened.
"Teresa Ellis, Apartment 2F. Boyfriend reported her missing around dawn." Dean said as he walked in "and her apartment?" Jo asked him "cracks all over the plaster, walls, ceiling. There was ectoplasm, too." Dean said "well, between that and that tuft of hair, I'd say this sucker's coming from the walls." Sam said "but who is it? Building's history is totally clean." Dean asked as Jo picked a picture up off of the table "well, maybe we're looking in the wrong place." Jo said "what do you mean?" Dean asked her "check this out." Jo said handing the picture to Sam.
It was just a picture of a field between two buildings."An empty field?" Sam asked "it's where this building was built. Take a look at the one next-door...the windows." Jo said "bars." Sam said "we're next-door to a prison?" Dean asked a few minutes later, Jo made a call to Ash and explained what was going on "thanks, Ash. And if you breathe a word of this to my mom-." (...) "that's right. I will...with pliers." She said as she hung up and then walked over to us "okay. Moyamensing prison. Built in 1835, torn down in 1963. And get this. They used to execute people by hanging them in the empty field next-door." Jo said.
"Well, then, we need a list...all the people executed there." Sam said "Ash is already on it." Jo replied. About twenty minutes later, Ash sent a list of prison inmates to Sam's laptop "a hundred fifty-seven names?" Sam said "we've gotta narrow that down." Dean said as Sam nodded "yeah." Sam said "or else we're gonna be digging up a hell of a lot of stiffs." Dean scoffed as I watched as Sam scrolled through the list, and then one caught my eye "hey, scroll back up." I said as Sam did as I requested, and then I pointed to a name; Herman Webster Mudgett.
"Herman Webster Mudgett? Why does that sound so familiar?" Sam questioned as I put my head back and groaned "come on, Sam. Haven't you ever heard of America's first serial killer?" I said as realization crossed Sam's face "that's H. H.
Holmes's real name." Sam said "you've gotta be kiddin' me." Dean muttered as I nodded "I knew I recognized the name of that prison. I just couldn't place it. He was executed there..sometime in the 1890s." I said "H. H. Holmes himself. Come on, I mean, what are the odds?" Sam said as he shook his head."Who is this guy?" Jo asked "the term 'multi-murderer,' they coined it to describe Holmes. He was America's first serial killer before anybody knew what a serial killer was." I said as Dean nodded at me "yeah, he confessed to twenty-seven murders, but some put the death toll at over a hundred. He enjoyed killing pretty petite blondes..." I said making Jo frown and shiver "typically, he used chloroform to kill them." I said as Dean nodded "I smelled that in the hallway last
night." Dean said "once he had been caught, the police found human remains, bone fragments, and long locks of bloody blonde hair." I continued as Dean scoffed and looked at Jo "boy, you sure know how to pick 'em." Dean said."Well, we just find the bones, salt 'em and burn 'em, right?" Jo asked as I shrugged "I mean, sure if we can round up a jackhammer." I replied making Jo furrow her brow "why?" She asked me "his body is buried in town, but it's encased in a couple tons of concrete." I explained as Jo shook her head "what? Why?" She asked "he didn't want anyone to be able to take revenge and mutilate his corpse." I explained as no one said anything back they just stared at me as I furrowed my brow "what?" I asked with confusion laced in my voice "how do you know all this stuff?" Sam asked me.
"Well, one of the many times I've been left back at a motel, the History Channel was running a documentary on H.H. Holmes...I kinda became obsessed with it. I was bored, so I made up my own case. I even interviewed the motel clerk; I went all Unsolved Mysteries on him. Well, now that I'm thinking about it, I never actually told him what I was doing, so he probably just thought I was some crazy kid." I said shaking my head while walking over to my bag "anyway, I made my own file about Holmes, I held on to it 'cause I was proud of the work I put into it." I said pulling out my file and handing it to Sam "never thought it would actually come in handy, though." I replied.
As Sam flipped through the file while Dean looked over his shoulder "this is actually really good, Ads." Sam said as I shrugged "I've watched you two and Dad make case files a million times." I said as Dean looked at me and smirked "ya know somethin'. We might have an even bigger problem than the concrete." Sam said "how does this get bigger?" Jo asked him "Holmes built an apartment building in Chicago. He called it the-." Sam read "murder castle." I said quickly as Sam chuckled and then continued reading.
"The whole place was a death factory, they had, uh, trap doors, acid vats, quick line pits...he built these secret chambers inside the walls. He'd lock his victims in, kept them alive for days. Some he'd suffocate, others he'd let starve to death." Sam said "so, Teresa could still be alive. She could be inside these walls." Jo said as Dean nodded "we need sledgehammers, crowbars. We've got to smash these walls, anywhere thick enough to hide a girl." Dean said.
[......]
The four of us split up again, Sam and I, and Jo and Dean. Each group set off to search within the walls of the building. So, Sam and I found an entrance and were walking sideways through the walls. Sam led the way with his flashlight. We weren't having much luck finding anything, and Sam had just gotten off the phone with Jo, who said they weren't having much luck either."Sam, can I tell you something?" I asked him "yeah, of course." Sam said "I think I might be claustrophobic." I said "why do you say that?" He asked "because I feel like I can't breathe right now." I replied as he chuckled at me suddenly, something tugged at my hair, and I screamed making Sam quickly turn around "what?!" Sam shouted "something's got my hair!" I yelled as Sam grabbed my shoulder looking past me as he started laughing.
"What's funny?!" I asked him as I looked up at him "it's nothing. You just got your hair wrapped around a nail." Sam said as he reached over me, unhooking my hair "it wasn't that funny." I mumbled as Sam turned back and continued walking "kinda funny." He replied "not when there are pieces of scalp being found in the wall, not really." I said
Ring! Ring!
He answered his phone, (.) "what? How'd that happen?" (.) "all right, we'll be right there." Sam said as he hung up "head back. Jo's been taken." Sam said as he looked up at me.
