PROLOGUE

It was summertime. The young Juan and his friends had been rummaging at the junk site for hours and they were quite thirty.

Then they came upon a coconut tree and when they saw young nuts, how their mouths watered.

How I wish I could climb, said Lito, Juan's buddy.

Without waiting to be prodded, Juan said:

Let me do it. Then he began to crawl up the trunk like a lizard. The trunk was slippery, but the young nuts were tempting, and its sweet water was waiting for the brave.

After a grueling climb, his bony arms and legs shaking, Juan reached the first bunch of coco fruits, selected a young nut which had greenish and smooth husk and  . . .
