Jaida took a moment to gather herself, making sure she had everything she needed before stepping out of the house. As she opened the door, she was surprised to see Mef standing in front of it.
"Hey, what you doing here?"
Mef stumbled over his words, taken aback by Jaida's beauty. "I-um tried calling you, but it was going straight to voicemail. I got worried for a second," he explained. Jaida sighed, not in the best of moods.
"I'm sorry, Mef. I have something to do," she replied. Before she could finish, he interrupted, "I can roll witchu."
His response caught Jaida off guard. "What? No, it's okay, seriously. We can hang out some other time," she insisted.
There was a pause as Mef stared at her intently. He reached behind her, closing the door firmly.
"You lead the way, please?" he said with his low, raspy voice. Jaida realized that he wouldn't take no for an answer. Reluctantly, they got into the car and drove off.
An hour and a half later, they arrived at their destination.
"Why we at the graveyard?" Mef asked, confused.
Jaida put on her sunglasses and replied, "Remember when you asked me where my nigga was?" She pointed towards the tombstones, "Well, there he is." Mef nodded, regretting that he had even asked that question.
"Today marks four years since he passed," Jaida continued. Mef remained quiet as he watched her get out of the car and make her way to the tombstone.
Jaida knelt, her eyes welling up with tears. "Hey, my baby," she whispered. She gently touched the picture on the tombstone, pouring her heart out.
She revealed everything that had happened in her life since the last time she had visited. "Rasheem, it's been so hard living without you," she cried, her emotions overwhelming her. "I want to move on, to live again, but I don't know how." Wiping away tears that kept falling. "All I know is... I have to let you go," her voice breaking with sobs.
The conversation Jaida had with Tia had made her think deeply about opening her heart to love again, about reclaiming the person she used to be before the tragedy. It was an everyday battle, but she kissed her fingers and placed them on the tombstone as her way of saying goodbye. As she stood up, she noticed Mef standing beside her. He instantly pulled her into a hug as she melted in his arms and cried her eyes out. Mef held onto her tight and kissed her head, letting her know she was going to be okay.
It took a while for Jaida to calm down, but when she did, they found a bench to sit on. "He meant everything to me," Jaida began the conversation. "It's so hard to move on, to let any man in. It feels like Rasheem and I broke up, but we didn't." She continued, "Ugh we were so young but so in love, planning our future," she shook her head in sadness.
Mef sat there in silence, listening attentively, trying to understand her pain. "I feel your pain Jada. I mean...I do but I don't. I've been dealin' wit death my whole life. My nigga Ason passed three years ago that is a pain that won't ever heal but I can't imagine losing a partner," he admitted. Ason was his group member known as Ol'Dirty Bastard who died from a drug overdose. Jaida knew about the passing of O.D.B, it was everywhere on the news. "Just know that I'm here for you. Call me for anything. I don't care what time it is... I gotchu," he said seriously.
Jaida leaned her head on his arm, appreciating how gentle he was being with her. Mef kissed her head softly, expressing his support and understanding. In that moment, Jaida realized that maybe, just maybe, it was possible to heal and find love again.
