“Right now? From who?” I sat up and began to stand. Jesse supported me as I listened for his answer.
“Yes tonight, right now. Shifters. They are attacking the main facility under the orders of Alpha Alex, because the vampires denied him. They will be under attack by Lycans in the morning.” The shifter reported gravely.
“Can you help me call off the attack? I don’t want to bury more good people.” I stated sadly.
“Maybe. If you drive me to the main facility I might be able to convince them if they haven’t already killed anyone.” He reported.
“Alright. You can borrow some shorts. Let’s go.” I stated. I could tell Jesse was already rallying the troops via mind link.
Jesse carried me out of the hot tub so I wouldn’t slip and into our room to change. We tossed the shifter some shorts and he went to the bathroom to change while we threw on clothing. Keith had swapped out with Lucian and was riding in the back with the shifter.
We got to the Main Facility in record time, and the shifter jumped out and called out like an owl. A bird fluttered down and shifted into a naked woman.
“Trader! What have you done?” She accused.
“You are all wrong and being played! These are not our enemies and many will die tonight for no good reason! These are not our enemies! THEY ARE FRIENDS!” The shifter yelled loudly. “Shift cowards and talk like civilized humanoids!” The shifter had an impressively deep voice that carried long distances.
A wolf loped out of the forest and shifted into a naked, gray haired man.
“Now that you have blown our cover Lucas, explain yourself!” He demanded.
“These werewolves love peace and hate war. They protect our widows and orphans. They buried our dead with respect. We have misjudged them, and we are being used as pawns. We need to change sides in this conflict. We are on the wrong side.” The shifter he called Lucas argued.
“Is this true?” The gray haired shifter asked. The naked woman shrugged.
I spoke up, “Yes. We put the widows and orphans in our guarded apartments under supervision, because children do not belong in prisons. We gathered your dead, washed, sewed, and clothed their bodies, placing them in wooden boxes so their loved ones could lay them to rest. We marked their graves with polished rocks from the beach, and the children spread wild flower seeds around their grave sites.”
“Where are they buried so we can confirm?” The gray haired one asked.
“In the burned clearing where many of them died.” I replied.
“Lieutenant, go.” He ordered and the woman shifted into a bird and took off rapidly into the woods. In five minutes she returned and shifted back.
“It is as she said. Even the seeds.” She reported.
“There are also five shifters raped and abused by Alpha Alex receiving therapy services within this facility and we just made allies with a shifter community in Vancouver. We are not your enemies. We want to be your friends. Can we stop fighting please?” I asked honestly.
“Stand down!” The gray haired man shouted loudly.
“May we meet here tomorrow morning at 10am? I would like to talk more about peace.” He asked.
“Of course.” I said.
“Clear out you lot! No fighting tonight!” He shouted as the woods came alive with animal sounds departing.
“Thank you” I bowed my head in respect to Lucas. “Many lives were saved tonight due to your actions. Thank you.” I stated.
“I am glad this was the outcome. I heard what you said at the funeral and agree, war is wasteful.” He winked as he shifted into a bird and flew off leaving Jesse’s shorts behind.
I pulled out my cell phone and dialed. Grand Elder Wallace answered.
“Sorry to bother you at such a late hour, but I have intelligence that will save lives. Lycans are on their way to attack you in the morning.” I warned him.
“Thank you for the advanced warning. We will evade them. With this gesture you prove yourself a friend.” Grand Elder Wallace ended the call.
“Bedtime?” I asked.
“Bedtime.” Jesse agreed.
We drove home, and went to bed. I fell asleep the moment my head touched Jesse’s chest. It had been a long day.
