Just a little over an hour had passed and Alexandria didn't have a wink of sleep. Lukas had passed out beside her with her jacket still over him, shivering slightly every once in a while from the cold crisp air blowing into the cave. Sleeping on his side to avoid moving the arrow in his shoulder.
The older sibling sat in silence just a bit away from the entrance of the cave, making sure to stay hidden. The only sound she could hear was the faint breathing from her brother. That sound alone was the only thing keeping her sane as a vortex of anger swirled within her.
"We've been searching for hours, can't we just call it a day and go home?" a man complained in the distance, the voice resonating through the trees.
Alexandria's head shot up but she saw no one close.
"Do I need to remind you of why we're doing this?" another spoke in a gruff and commanding voice.
There was no response and Alexandria quietly went over to her brother, shaking him lightly. Her heart picked up as her eyes shot to the entrance every few seconds. The boy soon opened his eyes and could just make out the features of his sister's face.
"They're both injured. There's no way they couldn't have gone far," the second man spoke.
Lukas pushed himself up quickly as he heard the voice.
"I see a cave up ahead," the voice of a third man was heard, closer than the others.
Alexandria led them both deeper into the cave to the other entrance of the cave quietly and the two exited on the other side of the hill. Day had passed. With the sun beginning to set, Alexandria worried about not having enough light.
"They were here! Look," the voice echoed through the cave that the two siblings could hear clearly.
Alexandria remembered the bloody fabric that she had discarded and cursed at herself. From the yelling in the distance, she was able to make out three distinct voices. While a smaller group than before, it didn't make the siblings less frightened.
Lukas had regained a bit of his energy but Alexandria was still beyond exhausted and the younger sibling could tell that his sister was incredibly fatigued. Alexandria wondered how long she would be able to keep it up before the hunters caught up to her. And she wondered what she would do when that time might come.
"There! Up ahead!" the voice was now louder and clearer.
Alexandria didn't have to look to know that the hunters had gotten closer but she noticed how they were no longer reckless with their arrows. The hunters were running low and they needed every shot to count.
Just as it seemed all hope was lost, Alexandria spotted a cabin to her right as they were running. It was far off in the distance and she almost missed it as it blended in with the many trees surrounding it. Alexandria almost smiled. And she would've if Lukas hadn't suddenly let out a shriek as he fell to the ground.
