Human civilisation was always divided between the poor and the wealthy, and the fact that there were more poor ones crowding the planet for decades annoyed the wealthy so much that they came up with an elimination system, one that would secure their positions in society and erase any filth they didn't like.
The project was released in 2125, and the results came almost instantly. The wealthy liked it so much they never backed down from it, despite the protests.
This cruel technique to reduce the population number consisted of a couple of steps, seemingly easy.
First, every 18-year-old had the right to obtain the "crystal", a special necklace with a transparent orb pendant.
Second, they had to meet the person of the opposite sex who would make their pendant shine and marry them.
Easy.
But it wasn't. And for many reasons.
One, pendant necklaces needed to be bought, and since they were made with special and rare materials, the price ranged in the hundreds of thousands. So, in conclusion, only those from the wealthy families had the opportunity to buy it, leaving the poor to fend for themselves.
Two, the system didn't work in favor of another population group, the LGBTQ+ community, since they couldn't marry the same sex and reproduce. Adoption wasn't allowed.
Three, all those who didn't find their soulmate by the age of 30, died. They would begin feeling depressed, not allowed to be happy until they met the one, and the emptiness in their chest would expand to the point of darkness eating their heart. They would die feeling hollow.
And, even though the wealthy came up with this system with no means of returning to the previous points, they died if they didn't meet their soulmate as well. Because the crystal technique progressed, and there was no going back.
People tried to crush the pendants, running off with the people they thought they loved... But their souls craved someone else, and they all eventually ended up dead as soon as midnight struck on their 30th birthday.
There was no precise rule of where one should or could meet their soulmate. It could happen anywhere, and that was why the wealthy often gathered, holding luxurious parties every other night in the hope that many crystals would shine.
Poor servants could only watch and mentally curse the higher class, who barely batted an eye at them.
And it was a pleasant June night when the powerful businessman organized a party, the large room of his mansion breathing luxury. Designer suits, shiny jewelry, silk dresses, ... These people knew how to dress up, but also how to eat.
Young waitresses circulated the room, offering champagne and food, while some of the guests served themselves, taking preferred foods from the large table in the back.
A sigh from a younger fellow brought a frown on the older one's face.
"Channie... Relax. Your crystal will glow."
Chan placed the piece of steak on his plate, pushing it next to the grilled vegetables, before he straightened in his cream-colored suit and glared at his friend.
