Saphira's POV

My mind spun wildly as I bounced along restlessly on Vanya's shoulder. I felt so bad for any tamed birds right now, how did they stand riding along on their master's shoulders all day with no way to get comfortable? I could sense the rider who was after us noticed our change in speed and from the little traces of magic I could summon they were getting even closer. Now with my elven ear I could pick up the slight pounding of hooves against the earth behind us. Vanya's expression was mixed with fear and determination as we pressed further into the borders of the White Wolves, and I prayed that the mountains would just suddenly loom up in front of me and welcome me back with open arms.

I actually didn't see the mountain's side until Vanya's horse halted, throwing me off of Vanya's shoulder and onto the ground in a whirlwind of feathers and talons.

I couldn't help but snicker at the mental image I created in my mind of my fall, and I could tell Vanya was having trouble stilling her own laughter as I picked myself up clumsily with my wings and waddled on my skinny feet towards the wall. The second I set my gaze on it a huge cave opening materialized in front of us, and spooked, Vanya's horse reared and took off leaving Vanya on the ground in a much similar position that I had been in. I merged back into my hybrid form and began to double over, laughing hard at her face and messed up form.

"Haha, very funny Saphira." Vanya mumbled although she was busy laughing a lot herself. I couldn't contain my laughter so I just settled for helping her up and guiding her into the mountain where I instantly felt the strength and power returning into my body. It was as if I was absorbing the living mountain; it was like a power source.

I stared at the familiar crystal décor and formations that lined the halls as we started down, and when we neared the crystal arch depicting my crest on the top we were suddenly flanked by a couple of white wolvian guards. Vanya stiffened visibly, and one of the guards drew back their lips into a vicious snarl as he stopped at glared at her. Vanya seemed to freeze, and I gently pulled her forward and through the crystal arch away from the irritant guards.

"She's with me boys, don't get your tails in a twist." I snapped, and they backed off with their heads bowed low to the ground as we walked away.

Vanya's eyes shone with admiration as we walked through the gem-encrusted halls towards my room. Her gaze lingered on all the diamonds and unharvested jewels that were tucked away in the walls, surprised at the fact that the very walls and structures around us were pure crystal and diamond. I guess the elven rulers didn't have the abundance of solid crystal formations to use for their kingdom.

"There's so much wealth and beauty in here, I didn't know the white wolves were this rich." She murmured as the ruby chandelier twinkled above us, dappling the translucent floor with fiery red specks. I had to agree with her, I never really thought about how good my kingdom had it, with the resources coming from the very mountain itself.

"I never fully noticed the value that my kingdom has had before until you pointed it out. But there is more beauty in it than anything else, I wouldn't even think of using any of my home for profit or riches." I chose my words carefully, knowing that Vanya was also a fellow princess, and a very well dressed on as well. Seems even with all her wealth our kingdom topped it by a milestone.

"I never knew that the wolvian race dwelled here, I mean it just seems surreal and magical! I mean I know we all use magic sometimes but this is remarkable, the Dwarves use this mountain as well, and they have never extracted any riches as precious as your halls!" Vanya's voice was nearly trembling with excitement as she ran her hand around a smoothly polished gold handle that was the entrance to my room. I felt my eyes shine as I looked at the doorway; it had been too long since I last went in there.
