Eomer’s POV

I was talking to Aragon and Gimli as they watched Legolas dance with Princess Vanya. I couldn’t help but notice how suspicious the two were as they glanced at the new couple. Like me, they knew where Legolas’s heart truly lay and they were a bit confused on why he was now married to someone else. I took a sip of my wine cup and then Saphira appeared in front of us like she had seen a ghost. I almost slipped up and called her Saphira out loud, but I held my breath and started over quickly.

“Lona, you look pale! Are you okay? What happened?” I glanced over at Aragon and Gimli who raised their eyebrows questioningly and I mouthed the word “cousin” to them and they nodded before moving away to talk to someone else, leaving me to deal with a nearly hysterical Saphira.

“We need to leave Eomer. Thranduil…he…he knows who I am! And I didn’t even say anything to him.” She rushed out, and I didn’t need to be told twice. I knew I shouldn’t have goaded her to come with me, she was an emotional mess right now.

“Shh, calm down Saphira nothing is going to happen to you. We can’t leave now, it’s rude and the guards will notice you leaving and question you. We have to wait till the ceremony officially ends.” I tried to reason with her, but she just glared at me and stalked off, probably to go fume in a corner or something.

Saphira’s POV

I gave an excuse to the guards at the stables that I was feeling really ill and I didn’t want the prince and princess to get infected, and they let me pass almost instantly. I didn’t bother saddling up Wind Breaker and I slung my weapons onto my back before guiding her out onto the trail. The guards let me pass when a messanger ran in with his face red with exhaustion. I took that as my lead and kicked Wind Breaker into a full gallop, and I just managed to catch the messanger say, “There is a thief amongst us, do not let anyone pass.” And that was all I needed before I knew that Thranduil was serious. He was never going to let me out of here alive. I walked into a death trap.

I rode through the forest with branches scraping at my legs and arms, wildly scratching my face and pulling at my hair. I heard the rallied cries of soldiers behind me and I wished that Faelwen or Silivrenniel were here now to help me. But I was on my own here and I could only rely on my inner wolf and Wind Breaker to get me to safety.

Legolas’s POV

People gathered at the windows to watch thousands of soldiers ride out into the Mirkwood forest to catch the rumored thief who stole Thranduil’s ring. I never knew that my father had a ring that was that special too him, but oh well I guess it was special now. I ran up to my father who was staring out of the window, lost in thought.

“Father, allow me to pledge myself to you but another time and retrieve your ring.” I begged him, I knew this would be one of the last times I would be allowed to go on thief hunts since I would now have more royal duties than ever. Thranduil looked at me for a moment with thought written all over his face before he nodded.

“Bring the thief back alive.” Was all he said to me before I leapt off the balcony with my quiver of arrows and my bow at hand. I was ready to have my own bachelor’s party.
