I walked to the end of the hall slowly because of all the people coming out of their classrooms and off to lunch. Once I got outside I broke off from the stream of people and made my way to the tree. I sat down with my back against it. There were no ants on this tree, there never had been. It was strange. I watched as people sat down at their tables with their groups. Sonny was the first to get to the tree after me. She sat down beside me to watch the people moving around.
"Hey." She said to me.
"Hey." I said back. "Something wrong?" I continued.
"No. Well. Yes."
"What's wrong?"
"It's Trevor." She said. My heart did this weird stop start thing.
"What's wrong?"
"Well I know we've only been dating a few hours but I don't think he's into it as much as I am. What do I do?"
"He's most likely just thinking 'Oh crap! How did I score such an awesome girl like her?'" I said. She smiled, instantly happier.
"You really think so?"
"Yep."
"Ok. Thanks." She said. Daniel arrived next.
"Hey ladies." He said to us when he sat down next to me.
"Hey." Sonny and I said at the same time. We looked at each other, smiling.
"What are you getting thanked for Willow?" he asked. I looked at Sonny who shook her head.
"Uh, just stuff." I said.
"What kind of stuff?" he asked.
"Nothing important to you anyway." Sonny said. I gave him a 'shut-up' look. He shrugged.
"So where's Trevor? Didn't you guys have the same class?" I asked Daniel as Sonny was getting a little worried.
"He's coming." Daniel said.
"Can you cover your ears please Daniel?" Sonny asked. He gave her a funny look.
"Why?" he asked.
"Just to it." I said to him. He rolled his eyes at me and put his hands over his ears. I turned to Sonny.
"You don't think I was too clingy or whatever at first lunch do you?" she asked. I shook my head.
"He's probably getting a drink or something. You know how big the lines get at lunch. Remember we spent three quarters of a lunch in that line?" I said trying to get her to calm down a bit. It worked.
"Yeah. You're probably right." She said and dug through her bag. I turned to Daniel and motioned that he could take his hands off his ears. I looked back at Sonny. She had two red apples in her hand. She handed one over to me.
"Thanks." I said.
"Well I thought why not since someone didn't have any lunch." She said looking at Daniel. He looked confused.
"Oh, it wasn't his fault. I didn't grab anything when I left home last night." I said.
"Like you'd be thinking of lunch for today." She said.
"Don't worry about it. Thank you for this apple." I said to her. I looked at Daniel. He had no idea what was going on. I looked up and saw Trevor walking between the lunch tables toward us. I elbowed Sonny and pointed. She relaxed. But as he was nearing the last tables before the grass started, Sarah was suddenly there with Brittany and Cathy by her side.
"Oh I hate that girl." Sonny said angrily.
"You're not the only one." I said. They were talking then Trevor tried to go around her but she didn't let him past. Sonny was getting off the ground but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back down to the ground.
"What?" she asked.
"Don't go over there. Wait and see what happens. You remember the last time someone was new, don't you?" I said.
"Yeah. And?" she asked.
"Just see what he does." I said. We watched as Trevor tried to go around her again. She stepped in his way. They started talking again and this time when he tried to go around her, she let him. Sonny went to get up again but I held her down. "Not yet." I said to her. When he reached us he was angry. I let go of Sonny's arm.
"Are you ok? What happened?" Sonny asked and moved next to him. He made himself calm down.
"Man that girl is annoying."
"Trust me, we know." I said and took another bite of my apple.
"She'll get over it. She's only messing with you because you're new." Sonny said. Trevor nodded and leaned in and kissed her check. Sonny blushed. She looked at me and I mouthed 'I told you' at her. She nodded. Then she mouthed 'How'd we score such hotties?' I shrugged. 'Oh right, we're awesome' she continued. I nodded. We ate more of our apples and no one talked about anything else. When the bell rung Daniel helped me to my feet. I put my bag on.
"Off to History we go." Sonny said to me.
"Let's go then." I replied. Before we left Trevor hugged Sonny.
"Meet me at my car after school." Daniel said to me. I nodded. Sonny put her arm through mine and started pulling me along to our classrooms. She didn't let go of my arm until we were outside our classrooms.
"Now Willow. Don't do anything stupid tonight alright? I'll be very disappointed in you if you do something!" she said in a fake parent voice. I smiled and shook my head.
"Yes Sonny. But I don't want you doing anything stupid with Trevor either." I said.
"I can't promise anything." She said and stepped inside her classroom so I couldn't say anything more to her. I watched her take her seat. She was smiling and I was evil eyeing her. She smiled bigger and I walked into my classroom next door. I took notes the whole time. The lesson didn't seem to go that long. It only felt like twenty minutes instead of seventy. Huh. I put my book in my bag and walked out of the classroom. I wonder what Daniel's house will be like, I thought. Would it be like Trevor's? Where did he live? When I got to his car he was already there waiting. I didn't notice before that he also had a Ute but it was a white Holden Ute. I don't know what kind but it was nice. I still would've preferred the blue Mustang beside it though.
"Ready?" he asked me.
"I guess so."
"Awesome." He said and got in. I opened the door and slipped into the passenger seat carefully because of my bag. I put my book bag next to it. He started the car, put it in reverse and backed out of the park. We started the journey to his house and I couldn't help but admit I was nervous.
