That night, at dinner, Ms. Smith exhaled slowly. "I know you weren't at the mall with Amanda."

Kendall's eyes went wide. "How'd you know?"

Ms. Smith crossed her arms over her chest. "Amanda called and was looking for you while you were out."

She put her head in her hands, sighing. "I'm sorry, mom. I shouldn't have lied."

Ms. Smith pursed her lips tightly. "I would've let you go if you told the truth."

Kendall sighed as her mother squinted her eyes at her. "Where did you really go?"

She squirmed uncomfortably. "Mom..."

Kendall received a disappointed look from her mother. "You weren't with that boy, Bill, were you?"

She shook her head, no. Ms. Smith sighed out of relief. "Bill isn't bad. I'm just saying... I don't want my seventeen-year-old spending too much time with boys."

"Mom... I'm almost eighteen."

She sighed. "And what about Bill?"

"I think he turns eighteen in August."

"Older men, now?"

"He's only two months older!"

She smiled. "I know but you're grounded."

Her eyes bulged. "What? Why?"

Ms. Smith crossed her arms over her chest. "For lying."

She looked down and remembered the movie with Colin. "But I have plans tomorrow."

Her mother shrugged unsympathetically. "You won't be grounded on Monday."

"But that's when school is."

Ms. Smith smiled. "My point exactly, honey."

She frowned and walked into her room. She fell back onto the bed, sadly, until her phone buzzed. Colin's name filled the screen and she felt a sinking feeling due to the grounding and their ruined plans:

The signal?

She sighed and texted back:

Can't go. Grounded until Monday.

She waited a few minutes before her phone buzzed again:

Why?

She sighed as she quickly typed a response:

I lied to my mom.

He almost immediately texted back:

Why'd you lie to your mom?

She wiped the sweat collected on her forehead before texting a quick reply:

I told her that I was meeting Amanda at the mall so that I could use her car but I was actually trying to find you and she found out that I wasn't with Amanda.

Colin texted back a few minutes later:

Ah... That sucks. I'll see you later?

That night, Kendall went to bed earlier than usual after taking a shower.

"Wake up, Kendall!" Amanda was shaking her, violently.

Kendall awoke, soaked in sweat. She gasped hard as she looked around the dark room but as expected, no one was there and she knew she was having a nightmare. She checked her phone for the time. Two a.m. Just then, her phone buzzed:

How can you sleep if you don't have dreams? You just have nightmares.

Xoxo,
Angel

P.s. How can it be that you still believe that something is out there?
