Kendall sighed, overwhelmed and rested her head back against the wall. Just then, the changing curtain swung open, making Kendall scream.
Amanda's grinning face popped in. "Nate said there's a Subway just around the corner."
Kendall's eyes were still wide from shock. Amanda squinted her eyes. "Aww, Kendall, I didn't mean to scare you! I'm sorry."
She glanced back at the mirror but the black words were gone. Her mind raced with explanations. Imagination. Her eyes widened at the explanation for the disappearing words. An invisible marker.
She forced a smile. "It's fine, I just need a few more minutes to myself. I... I'm just going to call Bill."
Amanda gave her a wink, disappearing out of the room. Kendall sighed, relieved for the privacy. She took out her phone, turning on the flashlight, she shine it on the area that the words were. The letters appeared instantly. She out the phone down and the letters disappeared. Her eyes widened with excitement from the discovery.
"Ha. Angel, you can suck my-"
A crash in the background startled her from her conversation with the air. She jumped, putting her phone away and picked up the dress.
"Hello?"
The silence disturbed her. The lights on the ceiling flickered once, then twice before completely going out. She shivered in the darkness. She ran down the hallway, into the room that was filled with natural light.
Nate was still standing behind the counter and Amanda stood in the corner with a smirk.
"How was your phone call?"
Amanda gave her googly eyes for effect. She forced a laugh. "Uh great... Did you guys not see the lights go out?"
Nate's eyes widened. "The lights went out?"
"Yeah back in the changing rooms the lights started flickering and then they all went out."
Nate exchanged a confused look with Amanda. "We didn't see anything because out here, we use natural light during the day."
Kendall frowned, looking around the store. "Did you see anyone come in? There was a crash before the lights went out."
Nate's eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "No I didn't see anyone come in but I think I heard something fall. I just thought that was you shutting the bathroom door. That door slams loud."
She put her head in her hands. "I didn't even use the bathroom."
He sighed. "Someone must've broken in from the back door."
He stepped out from the counter, walking down the hallway. They followed closely behind. He opened the bathroom door, taking a peak. "Everything looks fine in here. Plus, all the lights are on."
He walked to the back room, wiggling a door. "The back door is locked."
He went over to a set of switches. "Um, it looks like someone tampered with the lighting."
He looked around the room. "That box on the floor used to be on that table," he pointed to the a table in the corner. "That must've been what made that crashing sound."
He gave them a worried expression. "We should go now. I don't have a good feeling."
"What about the dress?" She lifted the dress up.
He shook his head. "Just take it with you?"
They walked back to the front of the store. Nate flipped the open sign over to closed and walked out into the street. They left Effie's Boutique with a display of a naked mannequin, thanks to Amanda.
