She scrolled down the screen's results, sighing. She went back and typed into the search engine: Nearest train station to Delaware, New York.
She found an Amtrak website and typed in her zip code and two train stations within a twenty-mile radius showed up: Albany which was only seven miles away and the other one was fifteen miles away. She decided to go with Albany Train Station. She then typed in the zip code for Brooklyn. NYC Penn Station came up. To Kendall's surprise, it was only four miles away from Effie's Boutique.
She sighed when she saw the cost of the train tickets. One hundred dollars for two. She called Amanda, expecting to hear her loud and chirpy voice answer right away. It took six rings for her to answer and when she did she whispered into the phone. "Hello?"
She grew worried. "It's Kendall. Why are you whispering?"
Amanda answered slowly. "Sorry, don't worry about it. What's up?"
"Well we're not driving to Brooklyn. Jenny will drive us to the Albany Train Station and we will board the train and go to Penn Station in NYC. To get to Effie's Boutique from there, we'll take a cab, bus, or walk the four miles to Brooklyn."
Amanda sighed. "How much are the tickets? I'll pay regardless."
"One hundred."
Amanda exhaled. "I'll call Jenny to pick me up at six a.m. and then we'll be there at around six ten."
"Thanks."
Amanda hung up, leaving Kendall wondering why she had been whispering. She got her outfit ready for Brooklyn and packed a bag for food, money, and chargers. She took a long and warm shower.
The second that she stepped out of the shower, she wrapped herself in a towel and dried. She didn't know where the tears came from but all that she knew was that she had to let the tears run. She had to let it all out.
Kendall felt free after feeling the tears dry on her face. She didn't even have to wipe them off. She hopped into bed, so sadly but happily.
~
Someone was shaking her awake, it seemed only a second after she closed her eyes. But, she knew it hadn't been a second because the sun greeted her. She sighed when she awoke to her mother's face hovering over her own."Amanda is here. I packed you food in that little bag that you left on the table."
She smiled. "Thanks, mom."
Kendall hurried into her clothes and down the stairs to meet Amanda. Ms. Smith waved them goodbye.
~
Amanda sat in the front with Jenny and Kendall was stuck in the back, alone. Jenny pulled out of the driveway. "Now, girls, this is a fifteen minute drive so beware. I will sing."They laughed. "That would be mean. We would be dead even before we get to the train station."
Jenny gave them each a hurt look but quickly erupted into laughter from trying to be serious.
~
When they got into the train station, they quickly walked to get their tickets up front. They sat in the waiting chairs.Amanda excitedly looked at Kendall. "Fifteen minutes and we'll be on our way to Brooklyn!"
Kendall rolled her eyes. "I can't believe you convinced me to do this. I mean, going all the way to Brooklyn just for a junior prom dress? We're not even seniors."
Amanda smirked. "-yet. We're not seniors yet. In three months."
Just then, a woman's voice came over the speakers. "People boarding the seven o'clock train to Penn Station in NYC, please board the train now."
Kendall gave her an excited look as they hurried to the train.
~
When they finally got settled into their seats, a man's voice filled the speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, we will be arriving in Penn Station at around ten fifteen. Please enjoy your ride on Amtrak."The train took off, and Kendall watched the Hudson River pass her eyes. She slowly fell asleep.
~
Amanda shook her awake. "Kendall, how are you tired?"She wiped the drool from the corners of her mouth, growing embarrassed. "Sorry. Watching the river and everything pass made me tired."
A man gave her a dirty look. "You were snoring so loudly, that I was afraid I would have to call over my friend, Penelope."
Kendall smirked, thinking that he was joking. "Who is Penelope?"
The man muttered. "My grandfather."
She giggled and Amanda elbowed her in the ribs as he gave them a dirty look.
Kendall whispered to her. "Wait, he wasn't kidding?"
An old woman muttered something under her breath in Spanish. "Idiota."
Unfortunately, Kendall had been taking Spanish since seventh grade and was just about to yell at the old woman when the man's voice filled the speakers.
"We are arriving in Penn Station in ten minutes."
Amanda forced a smile at Kendall. Her eyes went wide. "How long was I sleeping?"
Amanda shrugged. "About two hours."
Kendall squinted her eyes. "And you didn't try waking me up during those two hours?"
Amanda smiled as she watched the landscape outside change. "I didn't really notice until an hour ago."
Kendall laughed. "Wow."
Amanda looked back at her. "Would you want to wake me up if I was tired?"
She shook her head. "No, sorry. Thanks for not waking me up."
There was a woman staring strangely at the two of them. Amanda gave Kendall a strange look, obviously creeped out. Good thing there's only like five minutes left on this train.
Finally, the train came to a halt in the Penn Station. They hopped off the train and Amanda squeezed her hand excitedly. "Here we come, Brooklyn!"
