WE MADE OUR way to the empty grass field where the class game was set to take place. The sun shone brightly overhead, casting a warm glow upon the green expanse. Students gathered in small groups, discussing strategies and exchanging excited whispers.
At the front of the field stood the teacher, her commanding presence demanding attention as she explained the rules of the game. We were to play a modified version of Red Light, Green Light. The teacher would stand at one end of the field with her back turned to the students, who would line up on the opposite side. When she turned around and said "Green light," we would have to move forward, attempting to reach the finish line without getting caught. However, if she turned around and said "Red light," we had to freeze in place. Anyone caught moving after the command would be out of the game.
But this wasn't all to the game, in front of us were three ice boxes and a big table with a bunch of Iced Americanos sitting on top of it. While us students run to the finish line, we may grab any drink we want, and if we successfully make it through the finish line, we get to drink the beverage(s) and enjoy it.
The students cheered at this addition to the game, even though it was a bit windy and cool outside, we all still wanted a refreshing drink to ease our bodies.
As the game began, my heart raced with anticipation. The teacher turned around, her back facing us, and shouted, "Green light!" In an instant, the field came alive with movement. Students scattered, their eyes darting between the teacher and the finish line, eager to make progress.
Many students walked over to the ice boxes, lifting the top to reveal what was inside but my eyes were locked on the Iced Americanos.
I glanced over at Jungwon, a mischievous glint in his eyes. We both knew that this was our chance to prove our agility and quick thinking, treating this as another one of our competitions. We weaved through the crowd of frozen students, carefully avoiding any sudden movements that would give away our intentions. The field was scattered with cups filled with various drinks, tempting us with their refreshing contents.
As the teacher's back remained turned, Jungwon and I found ourselves reaching for the same cup of ice Americano. Our hands touched, and we locked eyes for a brief moment, a silent challenge passing between us. But before we could react, the teacher turned around and shouted, "Red light!"
Frozen in place, we stood there, our hands still hovering over the cup, touching each other's hands. Our gazes locked, and we exchanged a glare, a silent competition brewing between us. We both knew that only one of us could claim the cup and continue toward the finish line.
The teacher turned around once again, her back facing us, and shouted, "Green light!" In an instant, we sprang into action, releasing our grip on the shared cup and grabbing two different ones. We split ways, each determined to reach the finish line before the next "Red light" command.
As we moved forward, our eyes met once more, a mixture of determination and playfulness evident in our expressions. We both knew that this game was just a temporary diversion, a brief respite from the weight of our unspoken thoughts and emotions. But in this moment, as we navigated the field with agility and cunning, a sense of camaraderie formed between us. We were partners in this game, each pushing the other to do their best.
The competitive spirit burned within us, fueling our determination to surpass others. But beneath the rivalry, there was a hint of admiration and respect, a silent acknowledgment of the qualities we saw in each other.
But this setback only fueled our determination further. We stood there, frozen in time, our eyes locked in silent competition. The teacher's back remained turned, oblivious to the fierce battle of wills happening behind her.
And then, with a triumphant shout, the teacher spun around, her voice booming across the field, "Green light!" In an instant, we sprung back into action, our hearts racing. We surged forward, our steps quick and purposeful, the finish line beckoning us with its promise of victory.
