AS THE SUN began its descent, casting a warm glow over the gathering, the delicious aroma of grilled food wafted through the air. I could hardly contain my excitement; it felt like a celebration. The anticipation grew as we all waited for the signal that the BBQ was ready.
"Alright, everyone! The food is ready!" One of the teachers announced, his voice ringing with enthusiasm. The students erupted into a loud cheer. My stomach growled in agreement, and I couldn't help but smile at the buzz of energy around the place.
"Finally! I'm starving!" Hanni exclaimed, bouncing on her seat as she rubbed her hands together in anticipation.
We all crowded around the long table, plates in hand, as the teachers set down the steaming platters of grilled meats, colorful vegetables, and fragrant rice. Everything looked so appetizing, and I felt my mouth water as I filled my plate.
"Jurin, you have to try this!" Hyein urged, holding out a piece of grilled beef toward me with a bright smile.
I hesitated for a moment before smiling and opening my mouth for her to feed me. I took a bite, and my eyes widened in delight. "Wow, this is really good!"
"Right!" Hyein beamed, her enthusiasm lifting my spirits.
As we settled into the meal, I noticed the smile on Jungwon's face. He was talking and laughing with the others, but every once in a while, our eyes would meet. My heart skipped a beat each time, and I felt warmth spread across my cheeks. He had this way of making me feel seen, even in a crowded space.
"Rin," Jungwon called out, breaking through the chatter. My heart raced at the sound of his voice. "Do you want some more of this?" He gestured toward a platter of grilled chicken, looking genuinely concerned.
"Oh, um, sure," I replied, my voice a little shaky. I glanced down at my plate, feeling my cheeks flush.
He reached over and filled my plate with a few pieces of the chicken, his movements effortless and kind. "I thought you might like it," he said with a gentle smile, and I couldn't help but smile back, feeling a warmth spread through me.
"Thanks," I managed to say, trying to keep my voice steady. I focused on my food, trying to mask my shy excitement.
"Wow, you're lucky, Jurin." Minji teased from the side, her voice light and playful. "Jungwon's serving you like a true gentleman."
The teasing made me blush even more, and I could feel my heart racing. I glanced at Jungwon, who was now looking a bit bashful himself, a slight smile tugging at his lips. It was nice, sharing this moment with him, even if I felt a bit flustered.
As we continued to eat, the laughter and conversations around the table grew louder. I listened to Hyein animatedly recounting her latest dance practice, and the way everyone chimed in made me smile. There was a sense of belonging here, a warmth that wrapped around me like a cozy blanket.
"Okay, but you guys should see Haerin dance!" Hyein exclaimed, her excitement infectious.
"Yeah, she's amazing!" I added, and the group erupted into a flurry of compliments and stories about each other's talents.
I found myself feeling grateful to be part of this group. Moments like these reminded me how important it was to embrace friendships and let myself enjoy the simple joys of life.
As the evening wore on, I caught Jungwon's eye again, and he gave me a smile that made my heart flutter. I realized that I had a problem...
