AS WE FINISHED tending to my injuries, the boys who had orchestrated the prank approached, their remorse evident in their eyes. Yeonjun, finding his voice, spoke up. "We truly didn't mean for this to happen, Jurin. We're really sorry." After he said this him and Beomgyu bowed, showing their respect.
I glanced at him, my eyes filled with a mix of pain and forgiveness. "I know you didn't mean it," I replied softly, my voice laced with understanding.
Beomgyu nodded, his expression contrite. "We'll think twice before pulling another prank like that."
"So you guys caused this?" Jungwon stated, looking at the two boys as his glare was sharp. Their eyes widened in fear, nodding sheepishly.
"Immature." Was all the Jungwon said before wrapping an arm firmly around my waist. Gently, I wrapped my arm around his broad shoulder, feeling the reassuring heat seep through his thin, cotton shirt. An electric surge coursed through my veins, sending a tingling sensation that made my cheeks flush and my heart dance with anticipation.
Jungwon glanced at them, sending a sharp glare their way before walking away with me, leaving the boys embarrassed.
I glanced at Jungwon's face, seeing him looking in front of us with a stern face. I glanced away from him, looking at the campfire that was approaching.
With each step we took towards the flickering campfire, I couldn't help but notice the curious glances cast our way by Jungwon's circle of friends. Their raised eyebrows and knowing smiles revealed their unspoken questions, their eyes darting back and forth between the two of us. A mix of confusion and self-consciousness washed over me, but the unwavering support in Jungwon's eyes acted as a shield, protecting me from their prying gazes.
Jungwon guided me to a spot beside Haerin, before excusing himself to rejoin his companions. As I watched him melt back into the group, a surge of gratitude flooded my being. Despite the chaos and the lingering ache in my body from the accident that brought us together, I couldn't ignore the slow blossoming connection between us. In that very moment, surrounded by the symphony of laughter and the comforting crackling of the campfire, a glimmer of hope ignited within me, whispering that this unexpected twist of fate had set the stage for something far more profound and meaningful.
As the night grew progressively darker, and the campfire's dwindling flames signaled that it was time to retreat to our cottages, I noticed Jungwon detaching himself from his group of friends and making his way towards me. "Ready to head back?" Jungwon inquired, extending his hand toward me. I momentarily hesitated, using my actions as an answer. I firmly grasped his hand, feeling the warmth as he helped me up from the log. As we stood, my hand naturally found its place around his shoulders, while his arm slithered around my waist, providing support as we walked.
In a hushed silence, we continued our journey, the increasing gap between us becoming palpable with each step. The cool night air seemed to mirror the tension between us, as if nature itself recognized the unease in our midst.
Finally, we arrived at the door of the cottage. With a gentle release, I let go of his shoulder, the warmth giving way to an awkwardness that lingered between us. Jungwon sighed as he unlocked the door, holding it open for me. As I cautiously entered, I couldn't ignore the strained silence that permeated the cottage, intensifying the accumulated tension of the day.
Jungwon followed suit, closing the door with a resounding thud, avoiding direct eye contact. He made his way to the fridge, retrieving the soda cans from our earlier game that he had stashed in his pockets. I joined him, mirroring his actions.
"We seem to have quite a stash," I chuckled, reaching for a soda can and taking a sip, eliciting a breathy chuckle from Jungwon. He then retrieved his pajamas from his luggage, and I did the same. An eyebrow raised inquisitively as Jungwon observed me.
As our gazes met, a sense of confusion washed over me, mirroring the expression on his face. "Are you mimicking my every move?" he playfully remarked, a grin adorning his face.
"Don't flatter yourself," I retorted, gingerly passing by him, eager to change into my clothes first.
I hurriedly made my way to the restroom, being careful not to put pressure on my ankle. "Yah, careful." I smiled playfully as Jungwon voicing his concerned warning for me to take it easy on my ankle.
