The Princess wept openly now she was in the gardens. The darkness of the night enveloped her like a warm embrace, comforting her and reassuring her that she could let go amongst its presence.
Her Father had told her to go to her room, but she had already found herself making her way outside, desperately needing some air in her bruising lungs. The corset was so tightly knotted she felt as if she might be suffocated to death beneath it.
She took herself to a small corner, hidden away by the rose bushes and by a statue of a plump cherub, placing herself on the marble bench. She wiped her face with her fingers, feeling the trail of her tears drip from her.
In those moments, he really did seem more like the King than someone who had helped to create her. She saw how Wanda's Father was attentive and gentle with her, and she envied her for it. It was all she had ever yearned for. The only time her Father had displayed any sign of affection, was when he had to put on a show for others.
Loretta felt oddly hollow, like a carved out Pumpkin that was displayed on Hallow's Eve. Like she may collapse upon herself at any moment.
Her life was officially gone as she knew it, and she had no time to mourn. It was a sickening metaphor for womenhood.
Suddenly, with a clearing of a throat, she noticed Prince Barnes was standing over her, looking down at her disapprovingly, his eyebrows furrowed together tightly.
He was wearing a fur around his shoulders, on top of his leather and armour plating.
He looked so breath taking.
The Princess turned her head the other way slightly, trying to cower under the blanket of night, attempting to disguise the fact she had been crying.
It was no use however, he was incredibly perceptive.
The Prince felt anger and shame well within his chest at the sight of such a sad maiden. And at the hand of her Father too. He saw the blossoming bruise that was kissing her cheekbone now, as her pale skin reflected in the light of the moon.
Princess Loretta sniffed, forcing a smile onto her features, a mask was being put back on. He knew it well.
She bowed her head slightly, going to open her mouth before he held up a hand.
"You do not need to do that with me Princess. I am simply here to ensure your well-being." He murmured, his voice was soothing and deep. She felt her chest tighten all over again, but this time for a different reason.
Her face faltered just a little, as if she was debating on telling him the truth or keeping up the charade. Her nose was tinged pink from her sobs.
"That is very courteous of you Prince Barnes, I simply took a turn and needed some air, before I take myself to my chambers is all." Loretta said with a voice that threatened to waver.
