Before I even knew of Google glass or had heard of the "Internet contact lenses" I read Cory Doctorow's "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom", which is free to read on Goodreads. (You can read it here https://www.goodreads.com/reader/709-down-and-out-in-the-magic-kingdom). While Internet contact lenses, which are the contact lenses form of Google glass, are an external device, in the story there is a brain chip or something (I forget the details) that allows people to pull up webpages and information just by moving their eyes. I used to wonder who on earth would actually buy Google glass, but then again, people wondered who would buy the iPad, and look at where it is now.
I don't think I would like to have Google in my field of vision. Having Google implanted in my brain is a total no-no. Just think, you would start thinking "how to..." and see all the suggestions that usually pop up when you start typing that in the Google search bar, and I don't need to mention those suggestions because you already know how silly they are. Google, stay on the computer and keep out of my brain. Good Google! Good Google! No, no, no, BAD GOOGLE, sit, Google, sit! I said sit! No! Down! Ugh...
That said, this technology can lead to great progress and development as far as the rehabilitation of paralyzed people is concerned. They can operate their devices with their eye movements, or (potentially) with their thoughts. Really, thoughts generate electric activity in the brain, and that can be picked up as a signal and communicated to operate a laptop. Cool, no?
Too much automation scares me, though. I don't want a door that greets me when I walk in, or food that cooks itself. I mean, come on, it would be convenient, but just think of all the chemicals that would go into such a food to make it that easy to prepare. No? You still want your futuristic self-cooking food? Happy indigestion to you.
Would you ever want to try (or buy) Google glass or Apple watch? What's your favorite technology? My answer to this is the first word of the next chapter.
