I need a place to be, and no, Facebook, you're not that place. You're too public and too full of opinions.
Inside my head is a neat place to be, only, it's where I spend all my time. Literally. When Mama drives through a neighbourhood, she notices the architectural design of the houses we pass by. Me? I'm too wrapped up in my own thoughts to notice. Once when I had a serious case of the blues, Mama would point out flowers in the green areas by the road on purpose. "Look at the flowers! Look up! Look!" I appreciate her efforts, but it takes more than a flower to pull the plug on a really serious case of being down in the dumps. Don't get me wrong, flowers are great. They look pretty. But once they're out of sight, you're back in the depths of your own mind.
Which is why it's a good idea to take a trip outside your mind daily. It's on my to-do list, actually. Sitting down and closing my eyes and just...being. Takes a bit of doing, believe me, all the useless thoughts come floating in, but if you let them slip by, they soon slip out of sight.
I forget where I read these really cool visualisation scenes. There's this one scene where you pack all your troubles into a big box, attach a balloon to the box, and watch it float away until it goes behind the moon. Out of sight, out of mind. You can call the box back later if you really want to. There's another where you're floating on a fluffy pink cloud. The aim is to relax, and to connect to yourself by disconnecting from yourself, if you know what I mean.
What do you do to consciously relax?
