A slight muffled noise would occur everytime she brought her foot down for another tap, waiting. Her working eye scanned the field of clouds, an annoyed expression on her face. Hand on hip, she would let out a groan. Why must have Natalia have tricked her like this? If she knew it was going to be Mateo, she probably wouldn't have agreed. She didn't exactly like the kid.
But what was done was done, and she wasn't going to back out. Plus, how bad could be teaching him to fly really be? Well, she'd find out soon. It probably wouldn't be that bad, though, she reasoned. He was a wind fairy after all, so his flying skills couldn't be total ass. And though she was focusing on her thinking, she wasn't oblivious to the outside world, still observing the things that were happening around her. Footsteps had been approaching her, and she could see a tip of a shadow. That's why she wasn't that surprised when she heard a..
"BOO!!" Mateo shouted, jumping out behind Skye before moving in front of her. A small chuckle escaped his lips. He had already suspected the damsel wouldn't get scared but he attempted to frighten her anyway. Taking a step back, Mateos lips curved up into his signature smile.
The breeze swayed the wind faes hair and hanging accessories, kissing his tan skin. Stepping dangerously close to the edge, Mateo looked down for a split second. All he was met with was...more clouds, as expected. A large gust of wind nearly knocked him over, resulting in Mateo moving back to where he originally stood. While he was a wind fairy, he wasn't confident enough in his flying skills. Coincidentally, that's the reason why he's here in the first place! Mateo looked back at Skye, waiting for her reaction.
She blinked. That was it. That was her grand reaction. Fighting back the urge to roll her eyes, she'd greet him. "Hey. Let's get this over with," she said, adjusting the end of her fingerless gloves. Where should she even begin? Did she explain like he was a toddler or something? The girl mulled over her thoughts, trying to think of some flying tips she had learned over the years. Being a wind fairy, she loved to fly and soar up into the skies, like most of the people of her race, so she knew a lot.
"So you need help.. flying? You've gotta make sure to flap them consistently. Tuck them in to keep yourself steady, like you're gliding," she continued to rattle off tips, occasionally pausing to make sure he was listening.
Mateo let out a small sigh. Her reaction was expected, though something more than just a blink would've been nice. Oh well. Mateo took note of the tips Skye gave him. Gliding, tucking in wings, flapping... Luckily, Mateo had exceptionally good memory, so he was able to remember all of them.
Subconsciously summoning his wings, Mateo curled and uncurled them a couple times. His wings were more on the feathery side, like every other wind fairy. "Alright!" Mateo responded in the middle of Skye's lecture, appreciating how she was actually helping him learn instead of leaving him to suffer on this island with his already poor enough flying skills.
Abruptly, in the middle of her speaking, she'd stop. "I think that's it.. Let's test it out." Without hesitation, she'd shove him off the clouds. It had been around 10-20 minutes of her just explaining and giving pointers, so she thought he was ready enough to try it out. She had always been more of a practical teacher, rather than a theoretical one.
But although she had pushed him off, she still ran over to the edge as well, watching him. If he failed to, well, fly, she'd have to go and save him. Which would be a bit of a disappointment, but practice makes progress.
Mateo blinked. "Huh? Wait, are you going to push—" and before he could finish his sentence, the teen found himself falling. Remembering he had wings (unlike that time at the beach), Mateo crossed his arms in front of himself and spread his feathered wings. The distance from the cloud plains and ground were large, but at this rate he'd probably die if Mateo didn't do something about it.
With his wings already out, Mateo tried flapping them. However, with his minuscule amount of experience in taking flight, it wasn't very effective.
Skye watched him plummet for a few more second, letting out a sigh when she realized that he was most likely not going to be able to fly. With a shrug to herself, she'd jump off, feathery wings appearing, diving towards the black haired boy. A few dozen feet below him, she'd halt, catching him as he arrived at the altitude. Easily, she'd bring him back up to the plains, dropping him onto the crystals that were the clouds, trying to be as gentle as she could. "Well, that didn't work."
"Whoops. Thanks for saving me!" Mateo hit the side of his head. He didn't mind getting saved that much, in fact, he appreciated it. It was better than plummeting to his death gruesomely. "Oh! Your wings look really pretty," he stated. There really was no undertone or hidden intentions to it. Mateo just stated what was on his mind at random times.
"What??" She blinked, taken aback at the sudden compliment. The damsel was about to let them, well, fade away or do whatever you do to make your wings disappear, but she paused. However, quickly enough, she narrowed her eyes, suspicious. Why was he complimenting her?? Plus, they had really similar wings..
"Do you tend to your wings? As in brush or clean them?" Curious, Mateo to turn his head as far as he could in an attempt to reach his wings. He liked to imagine his wings as a birds. His hair and wings were ruffled by a sudden gust of wind. It was terribly windy here, as it was everywhere throughout the Kingdom of Calestis.
This was how it went on for a bit, Mateo complimenting or asking questions about her wings, and Skye answering, confused. Until eventually, she got tired of it, interrupting the boy in the middle in another one of his questions. "Quit it. You're supposed to be learning, stop distracting me."
"Aha, whoops!" Mateo raised his hands above his hand and smiled. He took a step back and performed a few stretches to release the tightness in his neck, showing that he was obviously not guilty whatsoever for diverting the girl's attention.
"What else should I know about flying?" Considering Skye brought them back to their initial objective, Mateo figured he'd ask to keep the lesson going.
"How to actually fly. Seems like you're not ready to actually do it, so let's practice up here, so I don't have to go and save you again," she'd answer, rolling her eyes as he stretched, as if he didn't care that he just wasted time. It was his idea in the first place, she didn't exactly want to be here, so it was odd that he was choosing to do that.
The wings he was complimenting a few seconds ago vanished, crossing her arms. "Go on, start flapping your wings. I want to see what exactly you're doing wrong."
Listening to Skyes instructions attentively, Mateo summoned his wings once more and started flapping them. His wings made repeated movements inward and outward. From the movement of his wings, a breeze emitted from them. Mateo rose a couple feet before landing shakily.
Her one seeing eye would look him up and down as he flew, squinted, taking in all the things he was doing. After he had landed back to the floor, if you could even call that a landing, she would run it over another time in her mind, before speaking. "Your posture is wrong, you're tucking your wings in at the wrong place, you need to do it more strengthfully." Her wings would appear once more, and she would demonstrate what he was doing wrong first—Which was quite uncomfortable, she had no idea how he flew like this—Before showing him how to fix it.
He proceeded to watch Skye, examining how she flapped her wings closely. Once the girl had demonstrated, Mateo tried mimicking her actions. The teen was a rather fast learner, being able to correct his posture. The other aspect of he was doing wrong however, would need more time. At the very least, the chances of Mateo plummeting to his death gruesomely were decreased.
As so, more time he needed, more time they spent. The wind fairy would teach him, teach him and teach him some more until he finally got it, actually flying with confidence. Now he didn't constantly look like he was about to drop out of the air and hit his head on the cloud below him, which wouldn't hurt but would still be quite disappointing.
Finally, she would let out a sigh. Time had passed, and the sky looked a little darker than it had before. Crossing her arms, she'd turn. "Well, that's it. If you can't figure it out now, well, then, it wasn't nice knowing you." Feathered grey wings would appear, and she'd fly off, speedy.
