Her body jerked forward with gasping breaths, but the heaviness she felt all over didn't allow her to move. Just barely, she cracked her eyes open, and was met with a familiar bright white light. She groaned and tried to roll over, but something prevented her. Something outside of her own control.
Skye braced herself and opened her eye fully, a headache flaring in the back of her mind. Or maybe that was already there. There were machines all around her, beeping. A nurse was in her room, pushing and arranging a tray of syringes and other medicines.
She wasn't lying down, no. In fact, she was completely upright. Maybe that was why she felt an indescribable pain in her back. Consciously and subconsciously ignoring the feel of her wings, knowing that they were there, summoned. As long as she didn't think about them, she wouldn't have to figure out anything she didn't want to hear. Not yet.
Facing forward was a leg. *Her* leg, propped up and put in a cast. Scrunching her eyebrows, it took a while for her to remember what even happened. Why she was even here.
*The fall.*
She must've hit the trees harder than she thought. Maybe hard enough so that her head was still wonky. Because the walls, instead of being the pristine white they were in Calestis, was a colorful array of crystals. And now that she thought about it, that nurse seemed oddly blue. And—Oh, and that guy is purple. Her thoughts interrupted by a seeming doctor entering the room, who instantly noticed she was awake.
"You're awake! Good, good, it's been quite a few days and I was starting to get worried," he smiled, stepping towards her little cot. The purple fae was obviously a seawing, but she didn't know why she would be surrounded by them. Well, her mind was more occupied by the being-asleep-for-multiple days part anyway. "You took quite the nasty tumble, its a miracle you even survived. Luckily, some of our scouts noticed you injured on the mainland and took you down here before it could get any worse."
The fairy blinked. That would mean she was in... "I'm in Sirenasia!?" They were the friendliest nation to her own, which was probably why they were showing her hospitality. But that would mean she fell all the way from the islands, to Armaranthos. She knew her limits. No way she got out of there with just a broken leg.
Deep down, she knew what the other injured part of her was, before the doctor even said it. "I suspect your magic cushioned the fall, given how uninjured you are. But you still have a broken leg, as you can see, as well as..." His face softened before delivering the news. "Both of your wings are broken. We tried as best as we could, but unfortunately, it will still take a long time to heal. At best, a few months. Your leg will heal up relatively soon."
As he got up and left the room, seemingly for her privacy, she placed her head in her hands, and wept.

It took weeks for them to finally release her. Her leg was relatively healed up, but they still gave her crutches, and she was told to use them. 24/7, her wings appeared on her back. If she made them fade away, the bandages would disappear. Plus, it would be painful if she did. A constant reminder on her back.
A while had to pass before she came to terms with the fact that, she couldn't fly. That while hadn't passed yet. It was still so unbelievable to her. A foreign concept, a truth that shouldn't have become anything more than a lie. Getting around was so strange, too. They put her in a sort of bubble elevator, and to get back to Calestis, they had people fly her. Carry her in their arms and go back up.
Her father was so relieved when he saw her. The hospital had called him and filled him in, but didn't allow him to visit. He wanted to help her with everything—Getting into bed, learning how to travel without her wings, everything. And yet she denied, shaking her head and asking one thing only. "Can I go back to Orchid?"

Skye brought herself into the dorm, having to use her magic with one hand in order to carry her things. As soon as she got to her room, she threw all the things into her corner. All she wanted to do was flop onto her bed, but she couldn't even do that! The frustration she had been holding down was bubbling to the surface. She groaned loudly, plopping down onto a beanbag and throwing her crutch against the wall.
So many things she had to relearn. Her favorite classes, physical classes, were out of the question. Even when her wings healed, she didn't know. She didn't know. She didn't know if she would be able to...
Fly.
