"Stealing my hue now?!"
•••
I had the most uncomfortable yet fulfilling conversation with my mother before class, as she called me to talk about our situation. I sat in the top of the stairwell, alone listening to what she had to say. To my surprise, it was an apology.
"So I've been going to therapy." She says in a rough, crackled voice. I could tell she had been crying, it was so hoarse.
"Oh... that's good!" This stirred up a lot of feelings for me. Mom was always so stubborn. I didn't think- she would actually do something like that. "I'm glad you're taking time to take care of yourself."
There was silence on the other end, and a bunch of students walked passed me running down the stairs. Creating the only noise there was to fill my ears.
"Yeah.. I was thinking about everything and... your aunt suggested it. Maybe we could start going together?" I she saying she wants us to do family therapy? Because I've got other things to worry about. I didn't need this.
"I don't know..."
"I know I've been treating you poorly, and I know you think I don't care. But I'm your mother, I'm always going to care about my daughters no matter what."
I felt the tears welling up in my eyes. If she was telling the truth, then I don't know what to say. All I wanted to do was scream at her through the phone.
Tell her how awful she's been. Let her know that she doesn't know anything about me, pick at her for hiding Tory from me. I just wanted to scream in her face and lay it all out there.
"I know you better than you think I do."
"Really? What's my favourite colour?" If she couldn't get that then... this was pointless. To the point of no return.
There was that silence again, and she hesitated before responding with blue. I sighed heavily and started crushing the phone in my hands. Allowing it to crack under my grip as I gridded my teeth together.
"You can't even answer such a simple question, and when you did, you got it wrong. It's purple mom. Purple! So no, you don't know me."
"Missy-"
"Don't. Look I'm glad you're taking care of yourself, but I gotta go. Class is gonna start soon."
"Melissa!"
Without another word I hung up on her, shoving the phone back in my pocket. I wanted a few minutes before wiping the tears away, and recollecting my thoughts before heading down to the main floor.
