Nothing compared to that rush of adrenaline, when you're stepping onto that mat for what feels like the first time. Even when it isn't. The only difference is everyone is watching you.

"SON OF A BIT-"

"HEY! WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE, THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING."

I scowled at my opponent as the referee gave me a stern warning. In which, I knew the man was serious after he blew his whistle, and then glared at me. Pointing his finger in my face, insisting that I follow the rule or get booted.

Of course I obliged and peacefully made my way off of the mat over to meet my team once again. All of my friends stood next to Johnny with the rest of the team. Keeping their sturdy stances and cold stares, anxiously watching my fight.

The one I screwed up...

Well- it didn't help that the dude was taller than I was, much stronger, and obviously more skilled. It was crystal clear to me that the boy I had just faced was doing this for a much longer time. I wasn't any real competition to him.

That knowledge obliterated my confidence in an instant, worse than anyone ever has. The fact was pressuring, and had me in a mental chokehold. I had to remember Sensei's words from earlier just to get by.

All though, maybe apart of me didn't really believe what Sensei Lawrence was telling us earlier, because of that I wasn't feeling motivated. The man was hungover and angry over who knows what!?

"Show no mercy"

Yeah.

Right.

"Hey it's okay! You did really good!" Sensei Lawrence assured me as I gave him a stale look.

"Mhm..." I hummed.

Truth is there were a million things I could've done better, but right now there was no time to dwell on it. I needed to refresh for my last fight, and soon after, Hawks fight. Then Miguel's.

Personally I wasn't excited to watch Eli get kicked around, but I also wasn't too worried about him. He knew what he was doing, I think...

"I'll be right back." I tell them just before heading for the gym doors.

I would not have believed you if a few months ago you'd be telling me I was about to fight in a karate tournament, in the schools gym, with Eli. It all feels so surreal to me.

Even as I plunged my hands into this sink, and filled my palms with cold water, I felt as if I was moving outside of my own body. Like: wow... I was really doing this... alone without my family! With Eli! Holy crap we could actually win... no because that would be so cool-
