Antonio was shaking his head. "All of you in the hallway. NOW!"
The kids went into the hallway, where they were told to wait for their parents.
"You are all in SERIOUS trouble! Darren, what were you thinking giving them alcohol?!"
"It's not like we drank in public."
He grabbed Darren and threw him against the lockers.
"It's just sparkling apple juice."
"Then why do you all smell like Molly's?"
"Dad, sparkling cider ferments. It's the aged apple scent."
"Then why does it say alcohol content on the side?"
"It's an old box he used to carry the cans in. I wouldn't drink underage." Diego started to say.
"Don't play stupid with me."
"Antonio, if this was alcohol, we wouldn't be drinking it. Go back to the district, okay? We're just trying to have fun." Mikayla said, her finger pointing to the exit.
"If I find out that that's beer, I'm bringing you all in."
He pushed the door angrily, making it smack against the wall.
"He fell for it." Diego said, tossing his empty can into the trash.
"Your dad's easily tricked." Mikayla crushed the can she had and tossed it in the trash.
"Now that Eva's out of the house, she's the trick puller."
"Terrance, ease up." Mackenzie elbowed him.
"I'm not sure if this is such a good idea."
"No one will find out about it. Unless big mouth over there squeals." She glared over at Mikayla.
"I'm the last person that would tell anyone about this. My mother is all the way in New York, she doesn't give a shit about me."
"She just wants to get to know her mother." Diego said.
"Three years is plenty of time."
"She flys out here eight times a year, and stays for two weeks at a time."
"Not the same thing."
"When Eva was away at college in Spain, I lost it. She was the only sister I had and it felt weird with her not being there."
"I'm an only child, I have two cousins from Will and my aunt Nat, and I have Teddy. That's it."
"All of us love you, even dipshit over there." He pointed his bottle up at Darren.
Darren waved at her with a half smile on his face.
"I'll be right back." She got up and headed into the girls bathroom. Her phone fell out her pocket and smacked to the floor. She picked it up and dialed Olivia's number.
"Lieutenant Benson."
"Hey Liv."
"Mikayla?"
"Yeah."
"Hi sweetie. I haven't heard from you in a while. How've you been?"
"Good."
"How's the school year going so far?"
"It was going, until we had a fire."
"Oh my, is everyone alright?"
"Only half the school burned, but it's mainly smoke damage."
"I'm glad you're all okay."
"We have to go to one of the other high schools in town. At least for now."
"Well that's good."
"Is my mom there?"
"Yeah, I'll transfer you. Hold on a sec."
The phone rang outside the office. Erin ran to her desk to answer it. "Detective Halstead, Manhattan Special Victims Unit."
"Mom?"
"Hey sweetie! I miss you."
"I miss you too..."
"What's wrong?"
"Why did you have to move away? I miss you, dad misses you...we all miss you."
"I miss you guys, too. My mother's unit was short staffed and she needed help."
"Grandpa Hank's unit was short, then someone snagged your spot. If you come back, you won't get that spot."
"Who took my spot?"
"Nadia."
"I'm glad she finally got into Intelligence. She's earned it."
"You're not mad?"
"I started out in the same spot she was."
"Guess who else is in Intelligence now?"
"Who?"
"Shay."
"Really?"
"A new patrolman was brought in, and grandpa offered her the spot."
"You've got some good people looking out for you."
"I just wish you were home to look out for me."
"I'm coming down for Thanksgiving."
"You are?"
"I am."
"Can you come down any sooner?"
"I can't sweetie, I'm sorry."
"That's what you always say."
"My mother is trying to find someone to fill my spot. Believe me, I wanna come back."
"Then why hasn't she found anyone yet?"
"She's looking, sweetie, she's looking."
"I have to get back to the dance. I'll call you later, okay?"
"Okay."
"Bye."
"I love you."
Mikayla didn't care to respond, so she ended the call and put the phone back in her pocket. As she went to head back to the locker room, she bumped into Diego.
"Hey you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"Did you talk to your mom again?"
"Yeah."
"You don't sound thrilled about it."
"I'm not."
"What happened?"
"She said she wants to come back, but I don't see her making any effort."
"She'll come back someday, don't worry too much about it. Here, have another beer." He handed her another can.
They lazed about for another couple hours drinking.
"What do you guys say we blow this joint and head back to my place? Watch a few movies?" Darren offered.
"Agreed." Everyone said.
Mikayla, Mackenzie and Terrance piled into the backseat, Diego hopping in the front. Darren put the key in the ignition and started up the car.
"Are you okay to drive?" Mackenzie asked him.
"I'm fine kid, nothing to worry about."
About fifteen minutes later, the alarm went off at the fire house.
"Squad three, truck eighty one, ambulance sixty one, battalion twenty five, car accident at thirty third and main."
