He took off to the school and ran inside.
"What do you mean Mikayla never showed up to school today? Her mother and I saw her walk out the door!"
"Did you see the direction she walked in?"
"She walked in the direction of this place right here!"
"She never showed up, Mr. Halstead."
"You couldn't have sent someone out to look for her? Really?!"
"That's not our job, Mr. Halstead. If you remember correctly, you're the police officer, not me."
"This is unbelievable."
His phone started ringing. "It's Voight. We've got a gun missing from the weapons room."
"Wasn't Bunny shot?"
"That's what I got told from the twenty sixth. Adam's dad is there."
"Who did it?"
"We have to wait for prints to come back from the lab."
"Do you know who could've done it?"
"Even if I did know, I wouldn't tell you."
He left the room to finish the conversation in private. Kim came in and went over to the desk, demanding information.
"Excuse me?"
"Give me what I asked for."
"You need to tell me who you are before I call the police."
"You'd be calling me, essentially."
"Give me your name before I call them."
"I'm a detective for the twenty first district. Mikayla Halstead is my niece."
"What relation are you to her?"
"I'm not blood related, but I've known her parents for twenty six years."
After the phone call finished, Jay came back into the office.
"What are you doing here, Kim?"
"I don't think you wanna know."
"I don't wanna know what?"
"I think she's doing drugs and drinking."
"Yeah, but Erin's been back for a year now. Her ways would've changed."
"I wouldn't be so quick to come to that conclusion."
"Why?"
"Check out her report card."
She went into the H drawer of the student file cabinet.
"Excuse me miss, those records are confidential."
"We're the police, and this is concerning his daughter. Oh yeah, here's a search warrant."
The secretary nodded and unlocked the cabinet drawer. Kim searched until she found Mikayla's file.
"She's not passing a single class. She used to be a good student and now? She'll be lucky to graduate with her class. You and Erin need to sit down with your children. If you took a look at Jonah's file, he's in the same situation as her right now. There is two months left to the school year. Jonah is supposed to graduate this year. You need to sit them down and talk."
She took her phone out and texted Mikayla.
"Where are you?"
"The hospital."
