"She's so tiny Bill." I say walking back into the hospital room. He half smiled, looking back at Taylor. I slide down in the chair, putting my hand in Toms as he continued to sleep. This had to work out, hoping we'd all go home and it'd be okay.
There was the sound of gagging and the beep of the machines increasing. Bills eyes widen as he look at me. Nurses rushed into the room, pulling the tube out of her. She laid back coughing and the color was back in her cheeks. Tom stirred awake standing next to us. Taylor sat up giving us a smile. I wrap my arms around her, hugging her tight. She groaned a little bit shifting around in the bed.
"Your going to have a lot of discomfort these first two days, in the next few weeks avoid stairs, heavy lifting and such." The doctor told her as she changed her bandage, Taylor had a big cut across her stomach from the c section. Hopefully it'd be an easy recovery for her.
"Have you seen the baby?" She asked quietly, looking up at me. Her eyes scared.
"I did, she's in the NICU in an incubator." Her eyes teared up and she cried in her hands as Bill sat by her side. Fuck this was hard to watch.
Bill pulled us aside to talk. "You guys should go home and sleep. I'm going to stay here." He was right, I hadn't slept since he woke me up, to scared. Tom nodded his head and we said our goodbyes for now.
"I love you girl." I told Taylor as I hugged her.
We left the hospital and set off in the car. He drove fast weaving in and out of cars till we made it home. I stepped out of the car, Marie and George come around the corner.
"Where were you guys?"
"Hospital, Taylor had the baby."
Marie smiled excitedly. "She did?" As I climbed the stairs, fatigue weighed heavily on my shoulders. The echoes of Marie's excitement followed me, but I couldn't muster the energy to engage further. Each step felt like a small victory, leading me closer to the sanctuary of our bedroom.
Once inside, I allowed myself a moment of silence. The events of the day replayed in my mind, the mixture of joy and worry, the relief that Taylor and the baby were safe. Stripped down to the essence of my being, I crawled into bed, seeking refuge in its familiar embrace.
Tom, sensing my exhaustion, joined me without a word. He wrapped his arms around me, his touch a silent reassurance. With a sigh, I closed my eyes, letting the events of the day fade away, and succumbed to the embrace of sleep.
Marie's POV
I watched them head upstairs to Toms room. I was so happy for Taylor and the baby, hopefully they'd come home soon. As the living room gradually darkened with the fading light of the sun, George and I found ourselves engrossed in the tv, seeking distraction from the passing hours. The sound of the garage opening made us look up. It must be Taylor and Bill. I get up excited and walk over. The door was open but there was no one here. I walk outside inspecting, the cold night air whipping my hair back.
"I think there's something wrong with the sensor, there's no one out there." I sat back down with him. A few minutes later the door slammed shut loudly. George, with his gun drawn, led the way as we ventured further, calling out for Tom and V. The silence that met our calls sent shivers down my spine, my heart pounding in my chest.
As George slowly pushed open the door and stepped outside, we were greeted by an empty yard and an eerie stillness in the night. Confusion and concern gnawed at us, leaving us to wonder what had just transpired. With a shared sense of unease, I whispered, "What the fuck just happened?"
Returning downstairs, my heart still raced from the unexplained event. George and I met in the living room, and our shared confusion hung heavily in the air. We exchanged worried glances, unsure of what to make of the mysterious slamming door.
