Sawyer POV - three months later

I scroll through Instagram as the headlines fly.

USWNT FORWARD TRINITY RODMAN TO MISS THE WORLD CUP DUE TO TORN ACL.

I sigh and put my phone down.

'There's a roster spot open'

I flop back on my bed.

'Get over yourself, you're not nearly good enough.'

My phone buzzes and I see Makena's photo flash across my screen.

I pick it up, "Hi, babe."

"Hey, you. What're you doing?"

I sigh, "Was scrolling through Instagram."

She hums.

"Did you hear about what happened to Trinity?" She asks.

"Yeah, it sucks."

"It does, and right before the World Cup."

I nod to myself.

"Babe. Don't stress about maybe getting that call to the senior team. You can't control if you do. Just keep practicing and maybe it will happen." She says.

I sigh, "And if it does?"

"Then I and your whole family will be there to cheer you on, okay? Don't stress about it. When you stress, it increases your anxiety, which then messes with your sleep among other things."

I smile, "I love you."

"I love you too, so much."

I smile.

"You're coming home soon, yeah?" She asks.

I hum and scratch Maverick's head.

"Yeah, just two finals left and then I'm headed home." I say.

"I can't wait to see you." She says.

I smile, "You just saw me like five days ago, babe."

She laughs, "I just miss you."

I bob my head, "I miss you too."

"Okay. I have to run, but see you soon. I love you."

I smile, "I love you too."

I hang up and sigh, staring at the ceiling.

'There's no way. There's so many other choices and I don't even have a senior call up. Stop being stupid, Sawyer.'

Alex POV

"I don't want to meet another family! I'm staying here until my mom gets out!" I hear Quinn yell.

I walk closer to the living room and listen to Liz.

She lets out a breath, "Quinn, listen. Your mom is not going to be out of prison for a very long time. She signed her parental rights away."

My eyes widen.

"What? No she didn't! She wouldn't do that! Why are you lying to me?" Quinn yells again.

Liz sighs, "I'm so sorry, Quinn. She did, that's the truth."

I round the corner fully and watch as Quinn shakes her head.

"You're full of shit! You are! I want to go see her. Alex, take me to go see my mom!" She looks at me.

I shake my head, "I can't, kid. It's too late to go. But Liz isn't lying."

She stares at me, "No! I hate both of you!"

She gets up and takes off upstairs then I hear the door slam.
