Sawyer POV - three days later
I shoot up in my bed and wipe my face.
I start crying, but try to cover it up.
Maverick gets up and licks my arm then burrows into me.
"Sawyer?" I hear.
'Fuck.'
I sniffle, "Sorry, Naomi. I'm okay."
A light turns on, "No, you're not."
I groan and start to get mad, "Stop."
"No, I won't stop. You're not sleeping. You're an emotional disaster and it's showing at practice. We can't beat Spain without you, so I need you to be at your best." She says.
"I don't know what's going on, but you need to figure it out." She says and lays back down.
I throw the covers back and Mav gets up.
I grab a hoodie out of my suitcase and throw it on.
'Momma.'
"Where are you going?" Naomi asks.
I clench my fists and Maverick jumps up on me.
"None of your business."
With that, I grab Maverick's leash and my keycard, then head out the door.
Mav stops walking and I stop to look at him.
He stands and walks to lick my hand and I kneel down, "I'm okay, buddy, just need to calm down."
I stand up and start walking and head out the lobby doors.
I look across the street and see the park then locate what I'm looking for.
I reach the swing and start using my feet to swing back and forth, calming me down.
I stop and grab my phone, calling Makena.
"Babe?" I hear sleepily.
I bite my lip, "Sorry, I woke you up."
"Hey. It's okay, you can always wake me up. What's wrong? It's like 4AM for you."
I sigh, "I had a nightmare and Naomi was like kinda questioning me saying I'm an emotional disaster at practice and it's showing."
"Well, is that true?" She asks.
I sigh, "Yeah, probably. My focus hasn't been great and I've been more anxious."
I can hear her thinking.
"You miss your momma. And I know that you're mad at her, but-"
"I'm not mad anymore." I say.
"You're being stubborn and not reaching out to her." She says.
I whine, "I'm not being stubborn."
Silence.
"Okay, fine, maybe a little. I just want to pretend it never happened."
"Babe, it did happen. You got really upset. You have to work through it with her. She loves you no matter what." She says.
I groan.
"You can do it. I believe in you." She coaxes.
"Okay. I'll call her." I say.
"Maybe wait until it's not two in the morning." She deadpans.
I smile, "Momma won't mind."
She chuckles, "That's true. Hey, I love you. Take a nap before your game. I'll be watching."
