After all these lies and efforts...this was how it came to an end.
I gulped, staring at Rehaan whose mouth was hung open in shock.
"Wha...whyyy? I don't...,"
Rehaan tried, but he couldn't come up with any words. I could understand his confusion and turmoil. In a single sentence, I tumbled over everything he knew.
As much as I felt bad for him, right now I was more concerned about myself.
Yeah I am a selfish creature, sue me.
"Rehaan, I...I didn't mean to lie..."
"Stop, just stop." He showed me his palm, before placing both the hands on the kitchen counter and taking deep breaths.
Lifting his face towards me, he asked me calmly, "What do you mean by getting paid for the work? We are talking about the housework and not about some business. Why would I pay my girlfriend?"
I bit my lips, not knowing how to explain.
"Give me an honest answer please." He pleaded. "I am not in a position right now to play the suspicion game."
His voice was pleading, but his gaze had hardened.
"Muskaan."
I jumped up at his tone. Gone was the gentle Rehaan, who gave me makeshift weapons for my own protection.
Just blurt out the truth, Muskaan. There's no use in lying now.
It was obvious that he had already connected the dots. He just wanted confirmation. That's it, and then I would be behind the bars.
"The reason I didn't work anywhere else for seven years wasn't because of financial abuse. I had a job for all these years. This was my job." I closed my eyes, before blurting out the truth that would bring my doom. "My job of being a housekeeper."
"Did I offer you a job because you were struggling financially?"
"Huh? Somewhat yes." I scratched my head, confused by his line of questioning. "Why...does it matter why you hired me in this conversation?"
"Not like that." He rolled his eyes, before clarifying, "Were you my girlfriend along with being my housekeep?"
Should I just jump at the opportunity and say yes?
"That doesn't make sense, does it?" He chuckled bitterly, running a hand through his hair.
There went my opportunity. Although I don't think I would have been able to follow through it regardless if he believed it or not.
"Why? Why did you lie?"
"I didn't lie," I corrected instantly. "Everyone else just assumed because of our age and I—"
"You just went along with it," he finished.
"Rehaan, I mean boss, I swear I didn't have any ulterior motives. I didn't want to lie but circumstances forced me to. But that doesn't mean I am the culprit. Please, please believe me. Please don't put me in jail."
"Boss, huh?" Rehaan muttered, a cynical smile on his face, as he ignored all my other words.
I looked at him with a guilty face. That's what he was to me. Yet I took the liberty of calling him Rehaan, even in my mind.
"I know I am wrong, but please please try to understand my situation. You also know how easy it was to suspect me. Every circumstantial evidence was pointing towards me. I just wanted to...survive."
