Betrayal
If you are thinking that I fell for that man's words and was feeling betrayed by Rehaan, then you are completely, absolutely, and definitely Wrong.
No, I wasn't feeling betrayed by Rehaan. I was thinking about the betrayal Rehaan had felt.
The puzzle of his random memories suddenly started making sense. All the dots finally got connected.
~The memory when he saw his parents taking money from my mother.
-His parents were acting, and so was my mother. They all weren't what Rehaan thought they were.
~The question about him actually being their son came up because of this.
-Because if they were actors then Rehaan could have been brought for a better image. Rehaan being their son could have been an act. That was what 15 year old Rehaan must have concluded.
~Rehaan not wanting to be a part of his parents' contract.
-An acting contract. The one his parents had with my mother. And after their death Rehaan had to become a part of it, whether he liked it or not.
From his memories, it was damn clear that Rehaan eavesdropped, found out the truth, hated every part of it and last, but not the least, was forced to be part of the contract he never wanted.
Even if it was for pretense, even if it was a lie, he was still my saviour.
It was easy for me to forgive him for his lie, because I had been through it. To lie...to survive, been there, done that.
To think that all the memories I considered faulty were true. Rehaan's half-assed memories were true, while mine were all fabricated.
Let's think about this later. We need to get away from this man right this instant.
"Are you still going to trust him?" The man yelled, as I resumed walking along with Rehaan.
I was going to just ignore him, but he pulled me by my elbows and made me turn with force to try and make me listen to him. My nose flared at his audacity, so I yelled back, "So what? Do you want me to believe our parents' killer instead?"
Shit! I shouldn't have said that. What if he ends up killing us too?
"Killer?" He looked at me open mouthed, before glaring down at Rehaan.
"Just what lies have you been spewing over all these years?" He yelled at Rehaan, before turning to me and speaking in a normal tone.
"I know I was too late. But just because I couldn't reach on time to save your mother, doesn't mean that I killed her."
Save her?
"Muskaan, don't listen to this guy. I don't know what changed, but he isn't what he used to be. His intentions aren't right. He is using you. You need to get away from Rehaan," that man warned me.
Before I could dismiss his warning, Rehaan's hand left mine and he spoke up in a hoarse voice. "Yeah, you need to run away. From both of us."
"What? Rehaan..."
I looked up at him shocked, not understanding why he was being like this, before it suddenly dawned on me.
Memory... Rehaan got another memory.
He looked at me with guilt, his eyes brimming with tears, "Run away. I am as much of a culprit as this man."
"Wha—"
"I killed our parents along with him," Rehaan said, dropping a bomb on me.
"Are you crazy?" That man shouted, making me jump out of my frozen statute in fright.
