Chapter TWENTYFOUR

I parked my car outside of Paul's house and jumped out of my car. I soon as I was outside Paul came running outside. He wrapped me in a hug immediately when he was close to me. It felt good being back in my childhood best friend's arms.

" Come on " He said after a while and pulled me inside his house. I greeted his parents briefly before continuing upstairs towards his room. I sat down on his bed as soon as I was inside is room.

" Thank you " I said to him.

" You're my best friend, you don't need to thank me " Paul said and sat down beside me. I leaned my head against his shoulder.

" What happened? " He asked.

" I snapped back at my grandma, which made hell break lose at home. When I left they were all yelling at each other " I answered.

" Good, she deserved it. She can't keep bringing you down all the time "

" She was saying I looked like a mess in pyjamas and that she couldn't look at me until I fixed and of course my food was badly done as well " I continued.

" What did you say to her " He asked.

" Then cook your own damn food woman " I said and he bursted out laughing immediately. He laughed for several minutes holding his stomach and gasping for air.

" It's not funny, I'm so going to get punished for it " I said and slapped him lightly on his arm.

" it's very funny Maddie " He said in between gasps.

" Paul! " I gasped and started laughing slightly too.

" You're right, your grandma is going to punish you so hard " He said after our laughter had died down. I let out a huff and started to regret my actions.

" Stay here tonight " Paul said calmly.

" You think that's a good idea? " I asked carefully.

" You can't go home to them tonight, let them all calm down a bit " He continued and grasped my hand in his.

" Okay, I'll stay " I answered and he smiled. I had missed him so much so I wrapped my arms around him once more. He was my best friend and somehow I had unintentionally pushed him away these past few months but still he welcomed me with open arms as if nothing had happened.

" You still have your pyjamas in the middle drawer " He said as we pulled away. I nodded and he walked downstairs to tell his parents that I was staying the night. Paul's mother was ecstatic and started to prepare a mattress and a pillow and comforter to me on the floor of Paul's room.

When it started to get dark we were called downstairs to eat dinner and watch some movies. I felt at peace here, I didn't have to pretend, I could be myself.

When the movies were done me and Paul went upstairs to get ready for bed. We brushed our teeth while dancing to some of the music he had on. We laid down in our respective beds and turned off the lights. I laid there in the dark a while before whispering out to him.

" Paul, I've missed you " silence was the only thing I could hear for a long while before he answered.

" I've missed you too Maddie " He whispered back and a smile grew on my face. I fell asleep after that and the sleep was peaceful and easy. No worries or concerns just peaceful sleep.
