"Isn't it weird?" asked Frannie
"No, it's melancholic and sad." answered Michelle.
"It's weird, melancholic and sad." commented Anna.
All of us nodded in agreement. It was true. We were all walking down our high school hallway just before graduation. It would be the last time we would be walking through these hallways in which we had been walking numerous times for the past 4 years.
"It's funny that after all these years of non stop drama, this is dramatic high school life is coming to an end. When I was really depressed the last few years, I used to wonder whether this would never end and when the end has come, I feel really empty and sad." Rhea remarked.
Rhea was now officially our friend and she was no more the bitchy cheerleader she was back in our Freshman Year. She was a girl who underwent so many trials in her life and now transformed into a strong, versatile, young lady who became the Cheerleading Captain last year. Rhea's life wasn't all that peaches and cream. Her parents disowned her in the Sophomore Year when she refused to date someone they wanted her to, because of some business stuff and since then Rhea lived with her grandparents in Bushwick. She was also bullied in school. Rhea had tried to suicide herself twice but after many counselling sessions, Rhea bounced back to her old, cheery self that Miles had fallen in love with back in middle school.
"Rhea, everything has an end. This is not the end, this is the beginning. A beginning for a new world, new dreams, a new you." Allison said soothingly, linking hands with Rhea, who was again her best friend.
"Though high school life has ended, our friendship is forever. We will be always be by each other no matter when or where. Isn't it true, Madam Valedictorian?" Hayley smiled cheekily at me.
"So true, Miss. Philosopher. We may get many friends and have new best friends but this bond of ours is special. We should always try to be in touch." I said, feeling nostalgic.
"Belle, learn to love again." Michelle said, smiling sadly.
Before I could reply, a huge body barrelled towards us.
"Roxy!" We cried out in surprise and hugged her.
Roxy graduated in our Sophomore Year but she still kept in touch. She lived in SoHo now and had her own dance studio.
"Oh girls! I've missed you so much!" Roxy exclaimed.
"Yeah, she misses you so much that she almost made me sick of your names by talking about you guys in the past week!" Greig scowled, playfully.
"Oh do shut up!" Roxy rolled her eyes at him.
Roxy did marry her high school sweetheart, Greig Winters, a year back. They were really cute and funny together.
"I think we should go up now. The graduation is about to start." Frannie noted, looking around.
*********
We took our respective seats and waited for the graduation to start. It wasn't long after that I was called up to give the Valedictorian speech .
"Good morning everybody! 4 years back, on a sunny day like this, I remember setting my foot inside this school. That day is not just significant for me. It is significant for all of us. We all entered a new chapter in our lives that day. Who were we when we entered the high school? We were excited and awkward teens. Who are we today? Today, we are confident, strong, young adults ready to take on this world. That's transformation. That's what high school makes you.
Like any high schooler, our lives too were filled with various high school drama. I had a lot during my Freshman Year. All what happened then were bitter but as time went by I am glad about it because all those bad and good experiences made me the person I am today. I am pretty sure all of you can say the same. High school changes us in many ways. Some people who we believed were our enemies one time, actually change into great friends here. Vice versa too does happen at times. I learned here that every single person has a story behind themselves. That every single human soul in the world were walking, living novels.
