Summary: It's the day of Logan and Patton's mid-year feedback, and Patton as an aspiring teacher is excited. Even if things are unexpected though - Logan is there for him.
Another positive about this teaching class in Logan's books was that the assessment seemed quite easy. First grades came after Christmas – and it was just an observation of how the high schoolers interacted with the class. Logan knew he wasn't totally natural around kids, so he was hoping to at least score a B.
For Patton, however, he was excited to score 100% on this assessment. He was never the smartest in the class, scoring Bs in all other subjects, but he felt smart in the elementary school. He could gather a crowd of children easily, make them smile and laugh, create fun games. He was going to be the best teacher!
He was so excited that he almost hugged Logan when he saw him organising his locker before classes. "Logan! Are you ready to see what we got in our observation?"
Logan just gave a small smirk that caused butterflies to explode in Patton's stomach. "I'm surprised you didn't go straight to the results board." Mrs Torres-Rosario knew a lot of her students were excited to see their first results for this class, so she set up a notice board outside her classroom and told the class she was going to place the results there on the first day of school after Christmas break. "Roman and Virgil couldn't wait so went to check our grades a few minutes ago – I thought I'd wait for you."
"Well, what more are you waiting for then? Let's go!" Before Logan could properly close his locker his right hand was grabbed as Patton sprinted down the corridor to the other side of campus. Logan thought he finally processed his homosexual feelings after coming out to his friends but whenever Patton did something surprising... He felt like such a mess. He held onto Patton's hand tighter.
Unfortunately, the moment of frantic joy was cut short by Virgil and Roman cutting Patton off on their walk back from the results board. While Roman was speaking Virgil brought the $10 out of his pocket, giving it to Logan while his eyes looked like a deer in headlights. Patton's eyes were luckily more concerned with Roman. "Heeey Pat! Lessons are starting in like 10 minutes, you don't have to see the results right now."
"But I want to see my feedback! I bet the kids have given such good stories about me, it'll be my first A since eighth grade!" Now, Logan really wasn't good at recognising facial expressions and body language – but Virgil's face was as easy to read as a kindergarten book. The results weren't as expected.
Patton had been chatting since the sleepover and after that he was so excited to be a teacher. He realised it was what he wanted to do. He had already looked at the local colleges and scholarships to those colleges and planning to major in elementary education. He felt like he was good at it. But if it turned out he wasn't... Logan wasn't ready to see Patton with a broken heart.
"I think we don't have time Patton, what class have you got next?" Logan's hand felt cold as he let go of Patton's hand, and he watched Patton look at a nearby clock confused – still not fully understanding what Logan thought he was alluding to.
Those blue eyes were hard to resist though when Logan's eyes just happened to swerve past them. He was giving the cutest puppy eyes. "It will just take a second – please Logie?"
The deer in car lights look in Virgil's eyes became one of soft realisation in that second interaction. He elbowed Roman just in case he had the brain cells that morning to figure out what was happening too before dragging Logan and Patton's attentions away from each other. "I guess we'll have time to check."
As the group walking down the corridor together they could see the crowds dispersing as most people came in early to check their results. By the time the four sophomores got to the board they were the only ones there. Virgil and Roman stood back to let the two actually taking the class look at their grades. It was quite easy for Logan to find his name – he got an A+? Well, that's expected for his other classes but not this one. Patton must have got top of the class then.
But as Logan turned his head to see Patton's reaction he was met with a sight he didn't want to see again. Patton's jaw was tense and his lips were bitten down to white with his eyebrows furrowed. He let his eyes fall as soon as he saw the paper and stuffed his hands in the pockets of his cat hoodie. "It's still an amazing grade Pat." Virgil immediately argued as Roman grabbed him for a shoulder hug from behind. He was really excited to get into the A grades with this assessment... and he got a B.
"What's my feedback Lo?" Patton quietly asked, showing Logan his baby blue eyes again with a quiver in his voice. Turns out Patton's laugh wasn't the only contagious thing about him.
Logan turned his head to the paper left of the sheet with the grades, where each teacher had written feedback about the teaching assistants they had in their class. He dug his nails repetitively into his forearm as he spoke – but could resist a smile escaping as he read the beginning of Patton's. "Yours is: Mr Baker is a joy to have in the class, the first graders adore him. He's everyone's best friend in the playground and he makes sure everyone knows it... But teaching is more than being the class's best friend. I would suggest increasing professionalism before the next assessment."
"I guess I won't be the best teacher." Patton said sadly, even though two of his friends were trying to reassure him. The next assessment, towards Easter, was the high schoolers creating and performing an hour lesson to their respective class. It was the definition of being a teacher. Logan's feedback, just below Patton's, was surprising in Logan's eyes too. It said: 'Mr Croft is a strong role model for all the kids. While not as ecstatic, he understands which children really need support and when – which really is what teaching is about.'
But Patton was upset, that's all Logan could really dissect right now. Roman and Virgil were giving him kind words, but it didn't seem to be effective. He kept on assuring he would be a bad teacher.
Patton likes physical affection, and Virgil and Roman were only concentrating on words. Usually, Logan had to build up to willingly giving physical affection to anyone other than his parents – or he needed to allot time afterwards to stay in the bathroom in silence. But that was changing watching Patton's broken heart. He needed to touch Patton right now.
The world silenced as Logan slowly grabbed Patton's hand, not making eye contact with Patton but showing sincerity and affection in every other way. "You're not the best teacher – yet. You have the whole of college to make you a good teacher, and I know – from the figurative bottom of my heart – once you get that college degree, you'll be first on the list for any teaching position you want."
Roman and Virgil were rendered to silence watching the two friends interact – Virgil even more so. How did he miss this when Logan came out to him? Logan really did adore Patton as more than a friend. The holding hands finally woke up Roman's brain cell to make him realise what was happening. His hand slapped on his mouth, but Virgil was there to curb any other expression of amazement with another elbow to the forearm.
"Don't." Virgil whispered under his breath in a growl, disciplining him like a dog, side-eyeing his romantic friend. Luckily nothing else was said as the school bell rang for first period. The teens let go of each other's hands and the group went to their separate classes.
