Summary: Roman is preparing for his Proposal asking Virgil to Prom, with Patton helping him. Janus and Remus are there too - and they relive the time they started dating.
So, Roman originally had the plan to ask Virgil to Prom through an elaborate musical in Ghostbusters costumes in the school canteen, sweeping his boyfriend off his feet and getting some lovely kisses in return. He even went through the plan with his four accomplices of Patton, Logan, Remus, and Janus. The introverts, Janus and Logan, had criticisms of the plan though – saying it would be Virgil's living nightmare. They were correct... So Roman asked Patton, his brother, and his brother's boyfriend to help with plan B after school one day.
"There's already someone he's interested in, he literally said 'can you be my' – I mean he obviously was going to ask me on a date!" Patton was talking about the morning before their presentations for the Education Placement class, helping Roman stick a 'P' on the poster while Janus and Remus were distracted whispering sweet nothings to each other and doing homework. Well, Janus was the one doing homework while Remus was flirting.
"And just like we've said before, you are the person he likes, you should ask him on a date." Roman wasn't normally the one to speak some sense to Patton, they were both as clueless as each other, but Patton really was oblivious to everything surrounding Logan. "Why are you so reluctant to ask him?"
Patton sighed, glancing towards Janus and Remus who were very obviously in love. Logan wasn't that affectionate, they had never really hugged, so Patton wasn't too sure there was any romantic feelings there. The two couples he was around every day were very touchy, and Logan was the opposite of that. They'd never even hugged. "I don't know, I guess I just want... something to prove it."
"Him being one word away from asking you out isn't proof enough?" Remus finally looked away from his boyfriend to raise his eyebrow at Patton, Janus snuggled under his arm and reading an algebra textbook. "Don't you remember when Janus and I first got together? I caught the guy in his gay awakening! Jan thought he was straight the morning before but had a boyfriend the next day!"
Janus gazed up at his boyfriend and took a deep breath. "Babe, I had my suspicions about it beforehand. You just made me act on it with your impromptu date." The older couple eventually looked away from each other and noticed the confused face of Patton and the excited face of Roman. "We haven't mentioned it in a while, have we?"
"Let's re-enact it!" Remus leapt from his seat, grabbing Janus' hand with him which pushed the hardworking senior also to a stand as he dropped his book. "Put your books down Jan, you already got into Penn State!"
*******
Janus and Remus were in the same class in eighth grade, but they were complete opposites. Janus was the teacher's pet, he loved books and reading, and worked hard to achieve the top grades. Remus was at school for the fun parts, loved the chatting and drama that came with the growing hormones and attitudes in his classmates' miniature bodies. Yet, they started talking in the corridors randomly about their teachers. They didn't consider themselves friends. In freshman year they were placed in a group project together and neither complained because they knew each other.
The project went quite quickly as both were willing to work hard on it. Janus worked hard because he wanted the grades, Remus worked because he wanted to impress Janus. Because Janus was cute, he had hypnotising hazel eyes which switched to yellow gold in certain lights. But he was straight, Remus had already asked during their middle school friendship, so Remus just had to admire from afar.
"Well, if we're done with the project I better head home." Janus was packing his resources in his backpack, not paying Remus much attention. Remus wanted him to stay though – it was Janus' first time in his house so he had to stay longer!
"Do you want to go stargazing?"
Janus raised his head. It was 5pm, nowhere near darkness, definitely not the time for stargazing. Remus was sat cross-legged on the floor, gazing up at him with his dark eyes, his hair getting messier as he relaxed more. Janus didn't consider himself attracted to anyone in school... But Remus was giving him a look that caused his breathing to pause and his face to heat up.
"Yeah, sure, um, outside?" Janus could hardly speak when he looked at Remus. What was happening to him? He wanted to run away but at the same time he didn't want Remus to leave his sight.
The freshman lay in Remus' garden staring up at the starless sky. The activity had changed from stargazing to cloud-gazing – Remus was joking about how every cloud was shaped like penises even if it wasn't. Janus' heart was beating a mile a minute and he was shuffling, hands on his stomach and mind elsewhere than the sky.
"And down there's the ballsa... Are you OK Jan?" Janus gulped loudly as his breath was taken away. Remus was giving him a concerned look when he was normally so jokey and comical, and it was breaking Janus' mind completely. "Your face is real red, are you uncomfortable with me talking about genitalia? I can change the topic if needed, it's no biggie for me."
Janus' first thought was that he could have Remus speaking gently in his ear for the rest of his life and he'd be the happiest he could ever be. What did that mean? Was he gay?
"I just um... I need some water." Janus' voice was weak and quiet, he was petrified, his mind was going crazy with wild thoughts he had never thought about before.
Remus' jokey attitude immediately changed into a caring one... A very attractive caring attitude. "OK, stay out here, fresh air can help with the anxiety." Remus pretty much ran in the house as Janus sat up, Janus watched him leave with wide eyes and an open mouth. Remus was very attractive.
"Here you go." Remus returned with a glass of water and knelt next to Janus. "I'm sorry if I mentioned anything triggering or something, I know I need to control talking about the dick stuff. I should have asked before joking with myself."
In school, Remus was an insufferable mess of jokes and teasing that Janus couldn't stop just... watching. But now Remus was in front of him and fully dedicated to him – he could have this happen forever.
Janus couldn't help but say something in this moment that changed his life forever, for the better. "Fuck... Can you kiss me right now? You're being so nice, and I honestly can't handle you looking at me like that."
Remus didn't do as told, he crossed his legs and furrowed his eyebrows. He was chaotic sure, but his first kiss wouldn't be taken by some straight guy. "You mentioned to me last year that you were straight?"
"Looking at you right now... I don't think I am." Remus didn't argue with that, and he was glad he didn't. The kiss was soft, short and sweet, leaving more for later. The pair stayed unlabelled for a while until Janus came out to his family, they took the news relatively well, and by the end of freshman year they were together all the time. Janus asked Remus to be his boyfriend when they were actually stargazing on a date, and it was a yes without hesitation.
*******
Remus and Janus were hugging again after their story, giving each other a big, long kiss after their storytelling. "Maybe Logan and I's love story will be like that?" Patton looked at Roman hopefully.
Roman just considered the story as motivation to make the best Promposal display for his boyfriend. "Of course it will be, he's obsessed with you already."
