Summary: Logan and Patton have a baking *not date* together and discuss their childhood crushes.
Patton's Mom and Dad were in the day-care, meaning Logan and Patton were home alone while they were baking. While Patton bent down to put the cupcakes that the pair had made together in the oven, Logan was staring. He was holding onto the kitchen counter with white knuckles, his eyes blown wide as he bit his slightly parted lips. He then looked away as quick as the moment started. But Patton could be stared at like that for eternity by Logan.
That stare meant something though. Or was that just Patton's hopes talking? It probably was. "So... Do you remember how long we bake the cupcakes for?" Patton chirped, watching Logan faze back into reality as he looked to the floor.
"15 minutes, correct?" Logan glanced at the recipe book while he answered, but Patton counted it as learning. It was nice how invested Logan was in learning how to bake these silly chocolate chip cupcakes. "What happens next?"
"Buttercream..." Patton searched for the butter somewhere among the clutter of things on the kitchen counter while Logan read the recipe. But when Patton raised his head, he was surprised to see Logan holding the cuboid of butter like a geologist's rare rock. "Oh, thanks Lo!" Logan smiled nervously as the butter was taken from him and looked down again.
There was a second of silence. "Can you believe Roman and Virgil are dating?" Logan said out of nowhere. Patton watched his expression, but it was blank.
"Well, they're cute together. With Roman being the hyper and fantastical one and Virgil being nervous and introverted, they bring the best out of each other, don't they?" Logan nodded, still reading the recipe even though it was only a page long. "Logan?" The nerd looked up; eyebrows furrowed but he didn't verbally respond. "You don't have to give details but... How's your self-discovery going? Is everything going alright? You haven't talked about it since the sleepover."
Patton noticed the private, quiet conversations with Roman and Virgil when they thought he wasn't around. Of course, the conversations could be about anything else but that was the one topic that Logan never seemed to openly share with Patton. The pair were close in all other aspects and Patton hated secrets. "It's alright... I can't stop thinking about it."
"Thinking about what?" Patton noticed the blush Logan tried to hide by turning away from Patton. His lips hid behind his covered teeth as Patton asked that question.
A million thoughts were going through Logan's head. It would be so easy to say 'you' and then explain his realisation, it was what Virgil and Roman had advised in their conversations about this crush. But it just didn't feel right. Patton deserved a romantic date proposal, not just chatting in his kitchen making cookies. There was nothing wrong with hints though – Roman had mentioned that it was equally likely for Patton to ask Logan out on a date if he just had some extra prodding. "About... A person that made me realise I had homosexual feelings. Just wondering what life would be like with them."
Patton couldn't help but smile watching Logan's expression soften, his voice sounding softer, a smile arriving on his lips. "Can I ask who it is?" Patton teased, coming closer to Logan, and gazing up at him with his pretty blue eyes. He was being way too tempting for Logan to handle.
"Sugar." Even though Logan's left hand wanted desperately to wrap around Patton's waist he didn't give in, instead using his left hand to grab the can of sugar in front of him. Patton frowned and let his eyebrows dip as he was given the sugar. He walked back to his place the other side of the oven and continued talking about measurements. "I don't think I ever asked how you knew you liked boys yourself?"
Logan adored watching Patton's cheeks pinken as he poured sugar into the bowl. "Oh, um... Well, I always kind of knew I loved everyone. I remember playing house and kitchen with both boys and girls in kindergarten. Roman only played with boys of course – apparently girls just weren't as good at putting things in the oven." Both Logan and Patton laughed, although Logan realised he never had an original thought. His childhood was like that too. "He always had a boy crush in the class though; I didn't quite realise my crushes weren't platonic until I got to puberty."
"Who was your first crush?" Logan knew not to change himself completely, but maybe he could edit his look to seem more attractive to Patton. The cheery boy blushed again, and his eyes glittered towards Logan.
"Don't judge me, but it was Sherlock Holmes. I saw the 2010 show when I was young and just fell in love with the character."
Logan was grinning widely, making Patton smile too. He looked so excited over something. "My first special interest was Sherlock Holmes, at least the first I remember." Logan laughed, bringing himself back to his young self. Could he look back and see some pointers for his sexuality in his childhood too?
*******
Logan could barely remember his early years; it was a lot to deal with. He couldn't remember his birth parents, and he could vaguely remember going through the multitude of autism assessments alone. He could remember when these two 'important women' came over to play a few times and could remember when he was told he'd have an eternal sleepover with them. He was scared, and that fear led to lots of late nights.
Often Logan would wake in the middle of the night because an owl was too loud, or the sound of electricity existed. He would spend some time in his room trying to read the picture books or lining up his Legos but eventually he'd wonder downstairs.
But one time the two women he was living with were cuddled up and watching TV. Logan peered from the corner. They were watching a scene where one man was super smart and trying to solve a crime and the other... The other was interesting. He seemed smart too but better – and little Logan couldn't put a finger on why he was better.
Teen Logan though, he could figure it out. Looking at this sidekick character made four-year-old Logan smile and captivated him, his dirty blond hair looked soft, and he looked kind. Logan had a crush on Watson from Sherlock Holmes.
"Oh Logan, are you still sleepy?" The TV paused on the character that captivated little Logan's eye and a silhouette of one of the women came from the side of the sofa. The woman was smiling softly while Logan still looked at the TV. "Were you watching Sherlock with us kiddo?"
Logan nodded and the other woman came from the other side of the sofa, she held Logan's hand to influence him forward. "Do you want to watch the show with us Lo? The main character is just as smart as you!"
For the rest of the night Logan was cuddled up under blankets, each woman each side, watching this TV show that grown-ups watched. He was very interested in the Watson character and was constantly asking questions, until he was too sleepy to properly pay attention. He was presumably taken up to bed that night, and a few weeks later he had grown-up bedtime stories that involved Sherlock and Watson solving crimes together.
When Logan had one of the stories read to him was when he first called the two women Mom and Mama, even though they had called themselves that for months. Soon he wasn't that bothered about the adventures of Sherlock and Watson and had moved onto another interest – but Watson was always pretty.
Watson was pretty - just like Patton was pretty. Apart from Patton was attainable, and much cuter when he showed his baby blue eyes through his circle glasses and when he giggled and smiled in Logan's direction.
