Summary: It's the day of Logan and Patton's final presentations in front of the first grade class. Logan has a lot of courage before and after the event, and the first grade teacher gives some helpful advice.
So I wrote this before the whole Palestine thing with the author of Heartstopper blew up. I don't know if she's still problematic but she grew up where I live so I still have a bond with the Heartstopper books. Free Palestine though.
Enjoy my cat though ^^
When Patton arrived at school on the Monday morning, he immediately ran to his Education Placement class that always met outside. More specifically, Patton ran to sit next to Logan under the oak tree. Logan had his headphones in, a book on one knee, and a memory stick in the other. Today was the day.
"Hi Logie! How are you feeling?" Patton chirped, glancing at the book Logan was reading. It was Heartstopper, the group had a movie night the previous weekend binging the entire series so Logan wanted to read the original. Patton also noticed that Logan was wearing his favourite cream jumper given by his first grade teacher. Overall, he was looking cute.
Logan didn't look up from the book as he bit his fingernail. "Alright, I'll help you get the mini-oven from the staffroom before classes start."
"I won't need it!" Patton cheered, organising all the worksheets he had created the night before with his mom. He was hiding the content of the sheets though – he wanted to see Logan's surprised face when he delivered the best lesson! "I have a different plan."
Logan's smirk could kill a man. "Oh, and what's this plan?"
"You'll have to wait and see." Patton's whispers made Logan's eyes expand and he could imagine the cartoon leaves flout around them. He looked away quickly, this time just looking at the memory stick he was holding. "You're doing poetry with them right?"
"Mhm. More specifically epic poetry – the class will write their own adventure." Patton and Logan's knees were touching, it was just them involved in this conversation, and they were fully concentrated on each other.
"I'm sure they'll love it." Patton's entire body was close to Logan, in fact. It felt as though it was just them, even though every student in the school was outside waiting for their day to start. This moment felt private though – the teens sat under the tree.
Logan was overcome with a calm feeling in that moment. For the first time, Logan's brain was not telling him to shut up and not reveal anything about his crush. It was begging him to say something instead. Now was the moment. It just felt right to say it. "Patton?"
Patton noticed Logan's eyes travel down to Patton's lips, then up again. Wow. He would have that happen again happily. Patton nodded, shuffling even closer to Logan. He was going to be kissed! Or maybe asked out on a date, or to Prom, this was going to be the moment Patton would tell his grandchildren when he's an old man in the retirement home.
"Do you want to be my..."
"Good morning class!" Mrs Torres-Rosario seemingly appeared out of nowhere, dragging Logan's eyes away from the situation and speeding his heart rate up considerably. It was no longer the perfect moment to say anything – the sudden shout in fact made Logan want to curl into a ball instead. Suddenly everyone was around them, countless amounts of people could have been watching them, the moment wasn't as perfect as he once thought. "Who's ready to teach some classes?"
Logan quickly stood, put the book in his bag and the memory stick in his pocket – saying nothing. "Come on." He eventually said as he walked forward, cursing himself that he couldn't just be normal. He had to have some time to calm himself down now.
"Did you want to ask me something?" Patton stood and held his folder to his chest, his heart breaking slightly as he watched Logan shake his head quickly. "Bad vibe?" That question was used to ask whether Logan was overwhelmed. Logan silently nodded, which reassured Patton that it wasn't something he did. "OK! Let's get to the classroom then."

Luckily Logan felt better by the time the first graders entered the classroom, and he went first to do his lesson on poetry. The class loved learning from the famous and cool Mr Croft, they were so proud of their individual work and the work they did together as a class. Their actual first grade teacher even said they'd hang the class poem up on the ELA wall. Now he sat at the back of the class and could see what Patton had prepared.
Patton did his usual good mornings as he logged onto the electronic whiteboard. The first slide he put on was simple, the cloud of a mind map with the centre being 'Play Therapy'. Of course, he decided to do a class on the thing he was passionate about. Patton's voice was clear and chirpy, as he let the first graders make the mind map together describing how they felt while they played.
Together, Patton and the class talked about games that could be used in play therapy. They were given a card each with a 'new student' in their class and worked in groups together to create games they could play at recess to make the 'new student' happier. Patton was so excited talking about play therapy with the children, more excited than he was when playing with the first graders in the playground.
Unfortunately, the lesson was over as quickly as it started, so Logan couldn't stay in his dream state admiring Patton forever. Instead of going out with the children for recess Logan and Patton offered to help the teacher staple the poem.
"Is play therapy a career goal Patton?" The teacher asked. At this point the teacher, a young teacher in her third year of teaching, joked that Patton and Logan were her little brothers. She was super excited to learn more about Logan and Patton's passions this day, and promised she was going to overmark because she liked the teenagers so much.
"Yep! Looking for early admission to University of North Florida, majoring in psychology when the time comes. I want to stay close to home, you know?" The teacher's eyes widened at that, and her smile became wider.
"I went to UNF! It's an amazing place and does an interesting Elementary Education major if you change your mind." Patton didn't want to change his mind; he was certain about his path now. Logan, however, was interested. And Patton was giving him a joking look in the knowledge. It seemed as though the teacher picked up on the look. "No way, are you thinking of education majors Logan?"
Logan shyly nodded and laughed. He wasn't overly fond of moving far away from home, he absolutely adored his moms and couldn't imagine moving too far from home and being near Patton was a plus in any situation. "I can have a look at it, having a friend there will help."
After school Logan was attached to his laptop, looking at scholarships for the University of North Florida. It wasn't just his lovey-dovey mind talking though – he was excited to be close to home while going to college. Mom and Mama were more excited though. They were going to move near wherever their 'baby boy' went to college anyway – not having to sell the house would be a bonus.
