I head cannon that Cole is color blind because of that scene in Master Of The Mountain where he said the Scull Sorcerer's scull was red when it was actually green.
To help with his color blindness he got contacts.
The rest of the ninja don't know that he wears contacts because Cole is too embarrassed to tell them.
