Tae sits on my lap sharing a bowl of Mrs. Chin's delicious shrimp fried rice when JJ comes into the kitchen.
"Hi JJ, how was your day?" Tae asks excitedly.
"It was good. Hey, I saw Teo in the shipping room bragging about how you," he says, casting his vison upon me, "personally invited him and all the management team to your holiday extraordinaire event this Saturday. He's such an ass talking about the gourmet foods and expensive gifts he'll get because he's management."
"What? I didn't do the inviting." I nod my head towards Tae.
"Oh, I knew right away he was lying. I completely understood when Kyle later told me he saw you, Tae, and confirmed that he and his parents were coming. I knew Kookie wouldn't do some dumb shit like that."
"Wait, what? I did and it was my prerogative," Tae huffs.
"This wouldn't have happened if Kyle's dumb ass hadn't blurted out in front of the whole team about the party." I explain.
"Kookie, Kyle was just excited. But I can't defend him on this one. He knows what jerks they are. He was a dumb ass in this situation like Kookie said."
"You two, they seem fine. Please stop overreacting."
"Tae, I don't think that was a good idea. I'm just an intern and I can see what a group of fools they are. You didn't hear the stories about last year's party."
"Well, Kookie will keep an eye on them. How bad could they be? No one better ruin my party. That's all I know."
"Baby, I'd never let that happen. I know how important this is to you." This party is so important. He needs it to help him settle into his new life. Family, friends, and community is what he needs. That was a huge part of his old life. He needs to know that he can have a life in Korea that he feels comfortable in. So, I don't fuss too much about the office knuckleheads coming. I will gladly give him whatever he needs to be happy. He is my love and my joy. And because of him I have a new life that's I could never have imagined.
"Thanks sweetheart," he says, giving me a peck on my forehead.
"So, I've ordered 2 gifts. Each guest can choose only one."
"Good luck with that," JJ snickers." Tae looks at JJ in horror.
"JJ, quiet," I say. "Go ahead, baby, let me hear more about your gifts." He smiles.
"The first is a crystal engraved pen set with a snow globe and the second is a 2012 bottle of Hall Pinot Noir wine."
"Damn, baby that's a 260,000 won bottle of wine." I whine.
"Kookie, since when have you been a cheap ass? Anyway, this is a Jeon party, so only the best. I guess I'd better not tell you what the crystal pen set and globe cost."
"Yes, baby, whatever you want."
"I hope you ordered extra to account for the stealing." JJ says with a chuckle.
"What? No one would be that rude."
"Yeah, right," I say.
"What?" Tae says.
"I'm not saying there's going to be stealing, but I'd order an extra few, uh just in case there's an accident and some them are broken." I share.
"Anyway, JJ, how's your dad?" Tae asks.
"He's doing great and he's finishing up his rehab. And ..." JJ clears his throat and swallows.
"And... I really miss him and my mom. This time of the year was really special to them both and we were always so happy, and now..." He tilts his head down, "and now s-she's gone... It's really hard."
